fix(core): reap orphaned processes in the subcontainer init (#3754) * fix(core): reap orphaned processes in the subcontainer init `launch_init` is PID 1 of a subcontainer's PID namespace, and with an empty command it blocked on TERM signals with SIGCHLD left at `SIG_DFL`. Daemons `setns` into that namespace rather than creating their own, so every descendant they orphan reparents to a PID 1 that never waits — and stays `<defunct>` for the life of the container. It now catches SIGCHLD and drains `waitpid` on each delivery, and once before the first, since the procfs mount that publishes `/proc/1` is what lets a caller join the namespace in the first place. `runAsInit` is unaffected: there the package's own command is PID 1 and reaping belongs to the image's init. That is a trade-off now rather than a free choice, so the packaging book, the `runAsInit` tsdoc and the SDK changelog say so — the last of which also names `tini -s` rather than a bare `tini`, since a daemon that leaves the option off joins the namespace rather than heading it, and only the subreaper form ever collected anything there. * docs(sdk): keep the runAsInit tsdoc timeless Reverts the `runAsInit` doc comment to what it said before this branch. Naming the init it displaces described the implementation rather than the option, and would go stale the moment that init's responsibilities changed. What the option does — run the command as PID 1 — is the part that stays true. Drop .gitmodules; repoint the web patch-db-client (package.json / common.mk / CI / shared-libs/web) and pi-beep's build (build-cargo-dep.sh --path). Upstream forks still pulled by git (async-acme, crab_nat, fuser) are left as-is. Verified: cargo check of start-core + start-cli + start-registry + pi-beep compiles the whole path-dep tree clean; Cargo.lock regenerated. * refactor(start-os): move manage-release.sh into the product manage-release.sh is the StartOS release orchestration (startos-images S3 bucket/CDN, the OS image arch matrix incl. -nonfree/-nvidia, the OS registry), not a repo-wide tool — move it to projects/start-os/scripts/. It still calls the shared scripts/publish-deb.sh (which stays top-level, since it publishes any product's .deb), now referenced by its repo-root-relative path. * refactor(debian): rename dpkg-build.sh -> build.sh, move publish-deb.sh -> debian/publish.sh Co-locate the deb tooling under debian/: the package builder is debian/build.sh and the apt-repo publisher is debian/publish.sh (was scripts/publish-deb.sh, which empties scripts/). Repoint the per-product deb build.mk targets, the manage-release.sh caller, and doc/comment references. * build: build pi-beep as a first-party member; reword "vendored" -> "first-party" pi-beep is one of our crates now, so build it like startos-backup-fs (a dedicated build-pi-beep.sh zig build of the workspace member) instead of routing it through build-cargo-dep.sh. That script is now only for the genuinely external crates.io dev tools (tokio-console, flamegraph) bundled into unstable/console images. Also reword the patch-db docs: these are our own crates, so "first-party crate" is more accurate than "vendored" (which implies a third-party copy). * ci: path-gate the per-product build workflows to their project + deps The start-cli / start-registry / start-tunnel / startos-iso build workflows ran on every push/PR (only skipping doc-only changes), so all four built regardless of what changed. Replace the blanket paths-ignore with a paths: allowlist scoped to each product plus its dependencies (start-core + the in-repo shared-libs crates, Cargo manifests, build infra, and — for the web-bearing/OS workflows — the Angular workspace and SDK). workflow_dispatch / workflow_call are kept so manual and orchestrated runs still fire unconditionally. * ci: migrate shared-workflows (service-package CI) into the monorepo Bring the reusable .s9pk build/release workflows and their composite actions in-repo from the standalone Start9Labs/shared-workflows repo, so the packaging toolchain lives alongside the SDK: - .github/workflows/{build,release,tagAndRelease}.yml (reusable, workflow_call) - .github/actions/{extract-version,free-disk-space,setup-build-env, setup-publish-env,upload-each} Their internal references (and the SDK package-template's three workflows + the packaging docs) are repointed from start9labs/shared-workflows@master to Start9Labs/start-os@master. These are workflow_call-only, so they don't run for the monorepo itself — they activate once this lands on master and external service-package repos repoint their `uses:` to Start9Labs/start-os. * docs(monorepo): document tandem-update couplings The per-product CI `paths:` filters mirror each product's build.mk prerequisites by hand — nothing enforces it. Add a "Coupled changes" section to the root AGENTS.md and reciprocal pointers in each gated workflow and its build.mk, so a change to one half is caught at the other. Also catalogs the remaining hand-mirrored pairs (reusable service-package CI <-> SDK package-template <-> packaging docs; the files touched when adding a product/crate) and the already-enforced couplings (ts-bindings, the five i18n locales, the UI beta seed, version <-> CHANGELOG, docs <-> user-facing changes). * chore(manpages): generate man pages into their product projects The export_manpage_* tests in start-core wrote every product's man pages into start-core's own man/ dir. Point each generator at the owning product's man/ dir (anchored to CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR), move the committed pages there, and update build-manpage.sh's chown and the docs. start-container's pages go to projects/start-os, since that bin is part of the StartOS product. * Retitle README * refactor(shared-libs): rename web -> ts-modules Mirror the `crates/` naming: the shared TS/Angular workspace dir becomes `shared-libs/ts-modules/`. Pure path rename — repoints every reference (angular.json, root tsconfig/package.json scripts, the Makefile include + build.mk, CI `paths:`, and docs). No code changes. * fix(monorepo): repoint stale paths from the projects/ move that broke CI Two classes of path left stale by nesting products under projects/: - Web apps `require()` repo-root config.json/package.json by relative path; the extra projects/ level meant every one was short one `../` (resolved to projects/… instead of the repo root), failing the esbuild UI build for start-os (ui + setup-wizard) and start-tunnel. - test.yaml and deploy-brochure.yml still `cd start-sdk` for the baseDist build; the SDK now lives at projects/start-sdk. * fix(debian): resolve PROJECT_DIR before reading VERSION debian/build.sh computed VERSION from "projects/$PROJECT_DIR/Cargo.toml" before PROJECT_DIR was assigned, so it read projects//Cargo.toml (empty) and double-prefixed projects/. The empty Version: produced an invalid DEBIAN/control and dpkg-deb rejected it — breaking the registry and tunnel .deb builds. start-cli's CI only runs `make cli` (the binary), so it never exercised this path. Hoist the PROJECT_DIR/INSTALL_TARGET block above VERSION and read "${PROJECT_DIR}/Cargo.toml" directly. Also only fall back to the OS product's usr/lib/startos/conflicts when that file actually exists, so non-OS products don't error on a missing conflicts file. * fix(web): prettier-wrap tsconfig paths widened by the ts-modules rename Renaming shared-libs/web -> shared-libs/ts-modules pushed the `@start9labs/*` path-mapping lines past prettier's print width, so `npm run format:check` (the Formatting & Lockfiles CI job) flagged the four product tsconfig.json files. It copied start-container from ../../target (-> projects/target, nonexistent), so the container-runtime squashfs was never built and the OS image compile failed on every arch. Use ../../../target. Refresh the AGENTS.md gotcha that described the old stale path. * refactor(make): namespace OS web targets, require an explicit target, per-project cleans - `ui`/`uis` -> `startos-ui`/`startos-uis`: they build only the StartOS admin UI + setup-wizard, so they belong under the startos-* namespace. fix(start-sdk): i18n throws on numeric params, and exec never closes stdin (#3770) * fix(start-sdk): resolve a locale Intl accepts before formatting i18n params setupI18n derives its Intl locale from $LANG, and a StartOS service container runs with LANG=C.UTF-8. That reduces to the POSIX locale C, which Intl rejects with "RangeError: Incorrect locale information provided" — so interpolating a number or a Date into a translated string threw at runtime for every package, on the server only, having worked wherever $LANG names a real locale. Settle once on a locale Intl will construct with, falling back through the package's own defaultLang to the runtime default. Where the environment names a real locale nothing changes, so locale-aware grouping is preserved. Found by an action whose result message interpolated a count; it failed on a 0.4.0 server and passed everywhere it was developed. * fix(start-sdk): close subcontainer stdin even when exec has no input The stdin write and the stdin.end() that followed it shared one `if (options.input)` guard, and cp.spawn is given no stdio override — so the child always gets a pipe, and with nothing to write that pipe stayed open for the life of the process. Any command reading stdin to EOF blocked until the exec timeout elapsed and SIGKILLed it, thirty seconds later, surfacing as a bare signal with nothing to connect it to stdin. An omitted input and an empty-string input both mean the command gets nothing, not that it gets a stdin which never ends. Close the pipe on every path, and tolerate a caller that inherited stdio and has no pipe to close. launch() and spawn() are untouched: both pass stdio: 'inherit'. * docs(start-sdk): changelog entries for the i18n locale and exec stdin fixes * docs(start-sdk): tighten the unreleased 2.0.10 changelog entries The section had drifted to a median entry of 111 words against 16 across the released history, and carried a duplicate `### Changed` heading. Cut the mechanism, the rationale and the rejected alternatives — which belong to the commits that made each change — and kept what a package developer acts on: migration syntax for the breaking change, the docs links for the new APIs, and the symptom that each fix removes. Safe to edit because 2.0.10 has no origin tag: nobody has received these. * docs: say what a changelog entry carries, and what the commit carries instead The existing guidance covered where an entry goes — which heading, released versus unreleased, checking origin tags — and nothing about what belongs in one. So entries drift toward explaining the change to whoever reviewed it rather than to whoever is upgrading, which is how the SDK's unreleased section came to hold multi-paragraph entries for fixes no package author could observe. fix(sdk): drop the inert `type` option from mountDependency (#3828) StartOS binds a dependency mount as a directory: `MountTarget.filetype` is `#[serde(skip_deserializing)]` and `SubContainer.mount` hardcodes `'directory'` for a pointer mount, both since alpha.16 disabled file mounts on dependencies. `DependencyOpts` nonetheless inherited `type` from `SharedOptions` and documented it as controlling file-vs-directory, so a package could ask for a file mount, compile, ship, and fail at runtime with a bare `mount exited with exit status: 32` — which is what packaging Stratum V2's Bitcoin IPC socket ran into. Make the restriction a compile error instead, and stop sending a field the host discards. `mountVolume` and `mountAssets` keep `type`, where it still works. feat(start-os): manifest-gated /dev/kvm access for service workloads (#3787) A service that runs its own virtual machines — QEMU/KVM, Firecracker, an Android emulator — could only interpret the guest in software, because /dev/kvm is not among the devices StartOS passes into a service container. Add `hardwareVirtualization` to the manifest, alongside the existing `hardwareAcceleration` / `userspaceFilesystems` / `virtualNetworking` grants, and route /dev/kvm through the same `handle_devices` pass-through. A dedicated flag rather than widening `hardwareAcceleration`: that flag means GPU access throughout the docs and the SDK, and the split of `nestedRuntime` into two narrow flags set the precedent that each device class opts in on its own. The grant is the device and nothing else — no capabilities, no VM management API; the service stays unprivileged, userns-mapped and AppArmor-confined. On a host without KVM `handle_devices` matches nothing and the service starts as before. The granted node keeps the host's permissions and belongs to the container's root, which on /dev/kvm's 0660 means the process opening it must run as root, as the GPU packages already do for `hardwareAcceleration`. Making a group-owned device reachable by a non-root service is a separate problem: it spans /dev/kvm, /dev/dri and /dev/kfd alike, and the node's inode lives in the overlay upperdir under /var/tmp/startos, so widening its mode without moving that directory's own would expose it to every host user. Tracked in #3790 rather than bolted on here. Collapse the per-flag pass-through blocks in `LxcContainer::new` into `LxcConfig::granted_device_paths`, so the flag-to-device wiring is one table a test can read, and extract the pattern matcher as `match_device_patterns`. Tests cover which devices each device class grants, that a package opting into nothing is granted none, the flag-to-device wiring for every flag, and that a host without /dev/kvm is granted nothing. Correct the v2 manifest field table in s9pk-structure.md, which listed v1's `wrapperRepo` / `marketingSite` / `supportSite` and a `docsUrl` that exists nowhere, and glossed `satisfies` as holding version ranges when it holds concrete versions. fix(start-sdk): drop undefined keys when writing an env file model (#3874) `merge(effects, { KEY: undefined })` removes the key everywhere except `FileHelper.env`, which rendered it through a template literal and wrote the string `KEY=undefined`. `fileMerge` leaves the key present with an undefined value and `z.deepLoose` keeps it, so whether it survives has been up to each writer: JSON, YAML, TOML and the XML builder drop it natively and `ini` was filtered explicitly, leaving env alone in serializing the word. Filter in one place both `write` and `merge` render through, so the contract holds for every format rather than five of six by accident, and merge's dirty-check compares the same bytes it writes. The ini writer's own `filterUndefined` call is now redundant. Live instance of the bug: bitcoin-explorer-startos writes `BTCEXP_REDIS_URL: input.redis ? redisUrl : undefined`, so turning Redis off handed btc-rpc-explorer a URL of "undefined" while the shape's `.catch()` reported the real URL back to the package, which then believed Redis was on. fix(start-sdk): drop undefined keys when writing an env file model (#3874) `merge(effects, { KEY: undefined })` removes the key everywhere except `FileHelper.env`, which rendered it through a template literal and wrote the string `KEY=undefined`. `fileMerge` leaves the key present with an undefined value and `z.deepLoose` keeps it, so whether it survives has been up to each writer: JSON, YAML, TOML and the XML builder drop it natively and `ini` was filtered explicitly, leaving env alone in serializing the word. Filter in one place both `write` and `merge` render through, so the contract holds for every format rather than five of six by accident, and merge's dirty-check compares the same bytes it writes. The ini writer's own `filterUndefined` call is now redundant. Live instance of the bug: bitcoin-explorer-startos writes `BTCEXP_REDIS_URL: input.redis ? redisUrl : undefined`, so turning Redis off handed btc-rpc-explorer a URL of "undefined" while the shape's `.catch()` reported the real URL back to the package, which then believed Redis was on. fix(core): refuse an impossible migration before the service is stopped (#3813) Downgrading Nextcloud 33.0.8:3 to 33.0.7:0 failed with "uninit target range `!` is unsatisfiable — no version can satisfy it (host contract violation)", after the package had downloaded and the running service had been quiesced and snapshotted. 33.0.8:3 declares `down: IMPOSSIBLE`, so it ships `canMigrateTo = "=33.0.8:3"`; 33.0.7:0 ships `canMigrateFrom = ">=32.0.11:0 && <=33.0.7:0"`. `install()` picks the uninit target through three branches, and the third had no guard: neither of the first two matched, so it fell through to `and(canMigrateTo, canMigrateFrom)` — an empty range. `RpcListener` normalizes that to `!`, and `VersionGraph` threw its internal assertion. Extract the branches into `uninit_target` and add the fourth case: two ranges that do not intersect leave no data version the outgoing package can produce and the incoming one can consume. It returns `VersionIncompatible` worded for whoever pressed Downgrade. `install()` calls it up front — before the download, before the service is touched — and again at the original site, where the data version is re-read after the container comes down. This narrows what reaches the container: a pair whose ranges do not intersect but that ships a hand-written uninit ignoring the target used to get further before failing. Since `setupManifest` derives both ranges from the `VersionGraph`, an empty intersection is the packager's own declaration that there is no path. The SDK's two messages now say what happened rather than name the range algebra; the `uninit` guard stays as a backstop for an older host. feat(start-os): open a UI at the address its service nominates (#3801) * feat(start-os): open a UI at the address its service nominates Open UI resolves an address from how the admin is reaching StartOS, which is right for most services and wrong for those bound to one canonical origin. CryptPad derives account keys from its origin; Ghost, Gitea, Vaultwarden, Synapse, and DocuSeal build links, callbacks, or identities from one configured URL. Those services already ask the user to choose that URL, but StartOS had no way to honor the choice when launching them. Add `preferredLauncherAddress` to `createInterface` and carry it through `Origin.export` onto the `ServiceInterface` record. The backend stores the optional metadata without interpreting it. Launcher selection parses the value, matches its scheme, normalized hostname, and effective port against the interface's enabled addresses, and opens the OS-generated match. The opened URL therefore keeps the interface's own path, query, and username rather than turning the preference into a redirect. Honor the nomination only where the current session is transport-compatible. Plugin addresses require a session on that plugin, which can presently be identified for Tor; Tor sessions accept onion or public addresses but not LAN addresses. Loopback, link-local, and bridge addresses are excluded. Missing, malformed, disabled, unmatched, or incompatible nominations fall through to the existing address-selection chain. Matching the full origin ensures a reassigned external port unseats a stale preference. Branch merged up to date with docs/monorepo-proposal first. * refactor(sdk): extract base into @start9labs/start-core shared lib; flatten start-sdk Move projects/start-sdk/base -> shared-libs/ts-modules/start-core (package @start9labs/start-sdk-base -> @start9labs/start-core), mirroring the Rust crate shared-libs/crates/start-core. start-core builds its own self-contained dist consumed via file: deps. Flatten start-sdk (package/ -> root): the SDK now imports @start9labs/start-core instead of ../../base/lib, and its published dist bundles start-core (bundleDependencies) so external authors still install one package. Repoint all consumers off the SDK-as-base alias onto @start9labs/start-core: - web (root file: dep + 153 import sites + shared/marketplace peerDeps) - container-runtime (file: dep; base/lib imports -> start-core, package/lib -> lib) Repoint osBindings generation, the build DAG (build.mk fragments, Makefile), and regenerate the three lockfiles. Resolves the "SDK kept cohesive" deviation: base is now an honest first-class shared TS lib named for what it is. * docs+ci: reflect start-core extraction; repoint SDK build steps off base/baseDist CI: build start-core (cd shared-libs/ts-modules/start-core && make dist) before validating the SDK + web lockfiles; validate the flattened SDK lockfile at projects/start-sdk; add start-core to the prettier check; repoint the iso prevent-rebuild mkdirs and the brochure deploy paths: filter (start-sdk -> start-core). Docs: update every project's AGENTS/ARCHITECTURE/CONTRIBUTING/README for the new layout — base extracted to @start9labs/start-core under shared-libs/ts-modules, the SDK flattened (lib/) and bundling start-core, container-runtime depending on both. Removes the resolved "SDK kept cohesive" deviation note. * refactor(monorepo): use the start-technologies name; repoint init-workspace at the monorepo - Adopt start-technologies for monorepo/repo-URL references across docs and AGENTS files (ahead of the GitHub repo rename; product refs left as start-os: projects/start-os, the start-os crate, *-startos packages, StartOS). - s9pk init-workspace now sparse-clones the start-technologies monorepo (projects/start-sdk/docs) instead of the retired standalone start-docs repo, and the two start-docs-named init strings are reworded across all five locales. - Un-hide the SDK 2.0 packaging-workspace section and rewrite it for the monorepo clone; document fetch-on-demand SDK + OS source access (docs first) in the workspace AGENTS.md and workflow.md. - Fix build-config.js to read and write the repo-root config.json.
