Merge tag 'nfsd-6.6' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cel/linux Pull nfsd updates from Chuck Lever: "I'm thrilled to announce that the Linux in-kernel NFS server now offers NFSv4 write delegations. A write delegation enables a client to cache data and metadata for a single file more aggressively, reducing network round trips and server workload. Many thanks to Dai Ngo for contributing this facility, and to Jeff Layton and Neil Brown for reviewing and testing it. This release also sees the removal of all support for DES- and triple-DES-based Kerberos encryption types in the kernel's SunRPC implementation. These encryption types have been deprecated by the Internet community for years and are considered insecure. This change affects both the in-kernel NFS client and server. The server's UDP and TCP socket transports have now fully adopted David Howells' new bio_vec iterator so that no more than one sendmsg() call is needed to transmit each RPC message. In particular, this helps kTLS optimize record boundaries when sending RPC-with-TLS replies, and it takes the server a baby step closer to handling file I/O via folios. We've begun work on overhauling the SunRPC thread scheduler to remove a costly linked-list walk when looking for an idle RPC service thread to wake. The pre-requisites are included in this release. affs: fix basic permission bits to actually work The basic permission bits (protection bits in AmigaOS) have been broken in Linux' AFFS - it would only set bits, but never delete them. Also, contrary to the documentation, the Archived bit was not handled. Let's fix this for good, and set the bits such that Linux and classic AmigaOS can coexist in the most peaceful manner. rename(): fix the locking of subdirectories stable inclusion from stable-v6.6.15 commit 1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I99TJK Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 -------------------------------- commit 22e111ed6c83dcde3037fc81176012721bc34c0b upstream. We should never lock two subdirectories without having taken ->s_vfs_rename_mutex; inode pointer order or not, the "order" proposed in 28eceeda130f "fs: Lock moved directories" is not transitive, with the usual consequences. The rationale for locking renamed subdirectory in all cases was the possibility of race between rename modifying .. in a subdirectory to reflect the new parent and another thread modifying the same subdirectory. For a lot of filesystems that's not a problem, but for some it can lead to trouble (e.g. the case when short directory contents is kept in the inode, but creating a file in it might push it across the size limit and copy its contents into separate data block(s)). However, we need that only in case when the parent does change - otherwise ->rename() doesn't need to do anything with .. entry in the first place. Some instances are lazy and do a tautological update anyway, but it's really not hard to avoid. Amended locking rules for rename(): find the parent(s) of source and target if source and target have the same parent lock the common parent else lock ->s_vfs_rename_mutex lock both parents, in ancestor-first order; if neither is an ancestor of another, lock the parent of source first. find the source and target. if source and target have the same parent if operation is an overwriting rename of a subdirectory lock the target subdirectory else if source is a subdirectory lock the source if target is a subdirectory lock the target lock non-directories involved, in inode pointer order if both source and target are such. That way we are guaranteed that parents are locked (for obvious reasons), that any renamed non-directory is locked (nfsd relies upon that), that any victim is locked (emptiness check needs that, among other things) and subdirectory that changes parent is locked (needed to protect the update of .. entries). We are also guaranteed that any operation locking more than one directory either takes ->s_vfs_rename_mutex or locks a parent followed by its child. docs: prevent warnings due to autosectionlabel Changeset 58ad30cf91f0 ("docs: fix reference to core-api/namespaces.rst") enabled a new feature at Sphinx: it will now generate index for each document title, plus to each chapter inside it. There's a drawback, though: one document cannot have two sections with the same name anymore. A followup patch will change the logic of autosectionlabel to avoid most creating references for every single section title, but still we need to be able to reference the chapters inside a document. There are a few places where there are two chapters with the same name. This patch renames one of the chapters, in order to avoid symbol conflict within the same document. fscrypt: Don't use problematic non-inline crypto engines mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.16-rc7 commit b41c1d8d07906786c60893980d52688f31d114a6 category: bugfix bugzilla: https://gitee.com/src-openeuler/kernel/issues/ICQ8LW Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=b41c1d8d07906786c60893980d52688f31d114a6 -------------------------------- Make fscrypt no longer use Crypto API drivers for non-inline crypto engines, even when the Crypto API prioritizes them over CPU-based code (which unfortunately it often does). These drivers tend to be really problematic, especially for fscrypt's workload. This commit has no effect on inline crypto engines, which are different and do work well. Specifically, exclude drivers that have CRYPTO_ALG_KERN_DRIVER_ONLY or CRYPTO_ALG_ALLOCATES_MEMORY set. (Later, CRYPTO_ALG_ASYNC should be excluded too. That's omitted for now to keep this commit backportable, since until recently some CPU-based code had CRYPTO_ALG_ASYNC set.) There are two major issues with these drivers: bugs and performance. First, these drivers tend to be buggy. They're fundamentally much more error-prone and harder to test than the CPU-based code. They often don't get tested before kernel releases, and even if they do, the crypto self-tests don't properly test these drivers. Released drivers have en/decrypted or hashed data incorrectly. These bugs cause issues for fscrypt users who often didn't even want to use these drivers, e.g.: - https://github.com/google/fscryptctl/issues/32 - https://github.com/google/fscryptctl/issues/9 - https://lore.kernel.org/r/PH0PR02MB731916ECDB6C613665863B6CFFAA2@PH0PR02MB7319.namprd02.prod.outlook.com These drivers have also similarly caused issues for dm-crypt users, including data corruption and deadlocks. Since Linux v5.10, dm-crypt has disabled most of them by excluding CRYPTO_ALG_ALLOCATES_MEMORY. Second, these drivers tend to be *much* slower than the CPU-based code. This may seem counterintuitive, but benchmarks clearly show it. There's a *lot* of overhead associated with going to a hardware driver, off the CPU, and back again. To prove this, I gathered as many systems with this type of crypto engine as I could, and I measured synchronous encryption of 4096-byte messages (which matches fscrypt's workload): Intel Emerald Rapids server: AES-256-XTS: xts-aes-vaes-avx512 16171 MB/s [CPU-based, Vector AES] qat_aes_xts 289 MB/s [Offload, Intel QuickAssist] Qualcomm SM8650 HDK: AES-256-XTS: xts-aes-ce 4301 MB/s [CPU-based, ARMv8 Crypto Extensions] xts-aes-qce 73 MB/s [Offload, Qualcomm Crypto Engine] i.MX 8M Nano LPDDR4 EVK: AES-256-XTS: xts-aes-ce 647 MB/s [CPU-based, ARMv8 Crypto Extensions] xts(ecb-aes-caam) 20 MB/s [Offload, CAAM] AES-128-CBC-ESSIV: essiv(cbc-aes-caam,sha256-lib) 23 MB/s [Offload, CAAM] STM32MP157F-DK2: AES-256-XTS: xts-aes-neonbs 13.2 MB/s [CPU-based, ARM NEON] xts(stm32-ecb-aes) 3.1 MB/s [Offload, STM32 crypto engine] AES-128-CBC-ESSIV: essiv(cbc-aes-neonbs,sha256-lib) 14.7 MB/s [CPU-based, ARM NEON] essiv(stm32-cbc-aes,sha256-lib) 3.2 MB/s [Offload, STM32 crypto engine] Adiantum: adiantum(xchacha12-arm,aes-arm,nhpoly1305-neon) 52.8 MB/s [CPU-based, ARM scalar + NEON] So, there was no case in which the crypto engine was even *close* to being faster. On the first three, which have AES instructions in the CPU, the CPU was 30 to 55 times faster (!). Even on STM32MP157F-DK2 which has a Cortex-A7 CPU that doesn't have AES instructions, AES was over 4 times faster on the CPU. And Adiantum encryption, which is what actually should be used on CPUs like that, was over 17 times faster. Other justifications that have been given for these non-inline crypto engines (almost always coming from the hardware vendors, not actual users) don't seem very plausible either: - The crypto engine throughput could be improved by processing multiple requests concurrently. Currently irrelevant to fscrypt, since it doesn't do that. This would also be complex, and unhelpful in many cases. 2 of the 4 engines I tested even had only one queue. - Some of the engines, e.g. STM32, support hardware keys. Also currently irrelevant to fscrypt, since it doesn't support these. Interestingly, the STM32 driver itself doesn't support this either. - Free up CPU for other tasks and/or reduce energy usage. Not very plausible considering the "short" message length, driver overhead, and scheduling overhead. There's just very little time for the CPU to do something else like run another task or enter low-power state, before the message finishes and it's time to process the next one. - Some of these engines resist power analysis and electromagnetic attacks, while the CPU-based crypto generally does not. In theory, this sounds great. In practice, if this benefit requires the use of an off-CPU offload that massively regresses performance and has a low-quality, buggy driver, the price for this hardening (which is not relevant to most fscrypt users, and tends to be incomplete) is just too high. Inline crypto engines are much more promising here, as are on-CPU solutions like RISC-V High Assurance Cryptography. ovl: Add framework for verity support This adds the scaffolding (docs, config, mount options) for supporting the new digest field in the metacopy xattr. This contains a fs-verity digest that need to match the fs-verity digest of the lowerdata file. The mount option "verity" specifies how this xattr is handled. If you enable verity ("verity=on") all existing xattrs are validated before use, and during metacopy we generate verity xattr in the upper metacopy file (if the source file has verity enabled). This means later accesses can guarantee that the same data is used. Additionally you can use "verity=require". In this mode all metacopy files must have a valid verity xattr. For this to work metadata copy-up must be able to create a verity xattr (so that later accesses are validated). Therefore, in this mode, if the lower data file doesn't have fs-verity enabled we fall back to a full copy rather than a metacopy. Actual implementation follows in a separate commit. fuse: Add module param for CAP_SYS_ADMIN access bypassing allow_other Since commit 73f03c2b4b52 ("fuse: Restrict allow_other to the superblock's namespace or a descendant"), access to allow_other FUSE filesystems has been limited to users in the mounting user namespace or descendants. This prevents a process that is privileged in its userns - but not its parent namespaces - from mounting a FUSE fs w/ allow_other that is accessible to processes in parent namespaces. While this restriction makes sense overall it breaks a legitimate usecase: I have a tracing daemon which needs to peek into process' open files in order to symbolicate - similar to 'perf'. The daemon is a privileged process in the root userns, but is unable to peek into FUSE filesystems mounted by processes in child namespaces. This patch adds a module param, allow_sys_admin_access, to act as an escape hatch for this descendant userns logic and for the allow_other mount option in general. Setting allow_sys_admin_access allows processes with CAP_SYS_ADMIN in the initial userns to access FUSE filesystems irrespective of the mounting userns or whether allow_other was set. A sysadmin setting this param must trust FUSEs on the host to not DoS processes as described in 73f03c2b4b52. rename(): fix the locking of subdirectories stable inclusion from stable-v6.6.15 commit 1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I99TJK Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 -------------------------------- commit 22e111ed6c83dcde3037fc81176012721bc34c0b upstream. That way we are guaranteed that parents are locked (for obvious reasons), that any renamed non-directory is locked (nfsd relies upon that), that any victim is locked (emptiness check needs that, among other things) and subdirectory that changes parent is locked (needed to protect the update of .. entries). We are also guaranteed that any operation locking more than one directory either takes ->s_vfs_rename_mutex or locks a parent followed by its child. ovl: add support for appending lowerdirs one by one stable inclusion from stable-v6.6.23 commit cc0918b3582c98f12cfb30bf7496496d14bff3e9 bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I9MPZ8 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=cc0918b3582c98f12cfb30bf7496496d14bff3e9 -------------------------------- [ Upstream commit 24e16e385f2272b1a9df51337a5c32d28a29c7ad ] Add new mount options lowerdir+ and datadir+ that can be used to add layers to lower layers stack one by one. Unlike the legacy lowerdir mount option, special characters (i.e. colons and cammas) are not unescaped with these new mount options. The new mount options can be repeated to compose a large stack of lower layers, but they may not be mixed with the lagacy lowerdir mount option, because for displaying lower layers in mountinfo, we do not want to mix escaped with unescaped lower layers path syntax. Similar to data-only layer rules with the lowerdir mount option, the datadir+ option must follow at least one lowerdir+ option and the lowerdir+ option must not follow the datadir+ option. If the legacy lowerdir mount option follows lowerdir+ and datadir+ mount options, it overrides them. Sepcifically, calling: fsconfig(FSCONFIG_SET_STRING, "lowerdir", "", 0); can be used to reset previously setup lower layers. rename(): fix the locking of subdirectories stable inclusion from stable-v6.6.15 commit 1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I99TJK Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=1db06b3d7d4b8b7bfdd3c35f281fefca817b68c0 -------------------------------- commit 22e111ed6c83dcde3037fc81176012721bc34c0b upstream. That way we are guaranteed that parents are locked (for obvious reasons), that any renamed non-directory is locked (nfsd relies upon that), that any victim is locked (emptiness check needs that, among other things) and subdirectory that changes parent is locked (needed to protect the update of .. entries). We are also guaranteed that any operation locking more than one directory either takes ->s_vfs_rename_mutex or locks a parent followed by its child. mm: thp: introduce multi-size THP sysfs interface mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.8-rc1 commit 3485b88390b0af9e05dc2c3f57e9936f41e159a0 category: feature bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I98AW9 CVE: NA ------------------------------------------------- In preparation for adding support for anonymous multi-size THP, introduce new sysfs structure that will be used to control the new behaviours. A new directory is added under transparent_hugepage for each supported THP size, and contains an enabled file, which can be set to "inherit" (to inherit the global setting), "always", "madvise" or "never". For now, the kernel still only supports PMD-sized anonymous THP, so only 1 directory is populated. The first half of the change converts transhuge_vma_suitable() and hugepage_vma_check() so that they take a bitfield of orders for which the user wants to determine support, and the functions filter out all the orders that can't be supported, given the current sysfs configuration and the VMA dimensions. The resulting functions are renamed to thp_vma_suitable_orders() and thp_vma_allowable_orders() respectively. Convenience functions that take a single, unencoded order and return a boolean are also defined as thp_vma_suitable_order() and thp_vma_allowable_order(). The second half of the change implements the new sysfs interface. It has been done so that each supported THP size has a struct thpsize, which describes the relevant metadata and is itself a kobject. This is pretty minimal for now, but should make it easy to add new per-thpsize files to the interface if needed in future (e.g. per-size defrag). Rather than keep the enabled state directly in the struct thpsize, I've elected to directly encode it into huge_anon_orders_[always|madvise|inherit] bitfields since this reduces the amount of work required in thp_vma_allowable_orders() which is called for every page fault. See Documentation/admin-guide/mm/transhuge.rst, as modified by this commit, for details of how the new sysfs interface works. tmpfs, xattr: enable limited user extended attributes Enable "user." extended attributes on tmpfs, limiting them by tracking the space they occupy, and deducting that space from the limited ispace (unless tmpfs mounted with nr_inodes=0 to leave that ispace unlimited). tmpfs inodes and simple xattrs are both unswappable, and have to be in lowmem on a 32-bit highmem kernel: so the ispace limit is appropriate for xattrs, without any need for a further mount option. Add simple_xattr_space() to give approximate but deterministic estimate of the space taken up by each xattr: with simple_xattrs_free() outputting the space freed if required (but kernfs and even some tmpfs usages do not require that, so don't waste time on strlen'ing if not needed). Security and trusted xattrs were already supported: for consistency and simplicity, account them from the same pool; though there's a small risk that a tmpfs with enough space before would now be considered too small. When extended attributes are used, "df -i" does show more IUsed and less IFree than can be explained by the inodes: document that (manpage later). xfstests tests/generic which were not run on tmpfs before but now pass: 020 037 062 070 077 097 103 117 337 377 454 486 523 533 611 618 728 with no new failures.
