kbuild: document recursive dependency limitation / resolution Recursive dependency issues with kconfig are unavoidable due to some limitations with kconfig, since these issues are recurring provide a hint to the user how they can resolve these dependency issues and also document why such limitation exists. While at it also document a bit of future prospects of ways to enhance Kconfig, including providing formal semantics and evaluation of use of a SAT solver. docs: use the lore redirector everywhere Change all links from using the lkml redirector to the lore redirector, as the kernel.org admin recently indicated: we shouldn't be using lkml.kernel.org anymore because the domain can create confusion, as it indicates it is only valid for messages sent to the LKML; the convention has been to use https://lore.kernel.org/r/msgid for this reason. In this process also change three links from using http to https. docs/core-api: expand Fedora instructions for GCC plugins In Fedora 36, cross-compiling an allmodconfig configuration for other architectures on x86 fails with this problem: In file included from ../scripts/gcc-plugins/gcc-common.h:95, from ../scripts/gcc-plugins/latent_entropy_plugin.c:78: /usr/lib/gcc/aarch64-linux-gnu/12/plugin/include/builtins.h:23:10: fatal error: mpc.h: No such file or directory 23 | #include <mpc.h> | ^~~~~~~ compilation terminated. In that distro, that header file is available in the separate libmpc-devel package. Although future versions of Fedora might correctly mark that dependency, mention this additional package. To help detect such problems ahead of time, describe the gcc -print-file-name=plugin command that is used by scripts/gcc-plugins/Kconfig to detect plugins [1]. kernel-doc: don't let V=1 change outcome The kernel-doc script currently reports a number of issues only in "verbose" mode, but that's initialized from V=1 (via KBUILD_VERBOSE), so if you use KDOC_WERROR=1 then adding V=1 might actually break the build. This is rather unexpected. Change kernel-doc to not change its behaviour wrt. errors (or warnings) when verbose mode is enabled, but rather add separate warning flags (and -Wall) for it. Allow enabling those flags via environment/make variables in the kernel's build system for easier user use, but to not have to parse them in the script itself. Documentation: kbuild: explain handling optional dependencies This problem frequently comes up in randconfig testing, with drivers failing to link because of a dependency on an optional feature. The Kconfig language for this is very confusing, so try to document it in "Kconfig hints" section. Documentation/llvm: refresh docs Recent fixes for an embargoed hardware security vulnerability failed to link with ld.lld (LLVM's linker). [0] To be fair, our documentation mentions CC=clang foremost with LLVM=1 being buried "below the fold." We want to encourage the use of LLVM=1 rather than just CC=clang. Make that suggestion "above the fold" and "front and center" in our docs. While here, the following additional changes were made: - remove the bit about CROSS_COMPILE setting --target=, that's no longer true. - Add ARCH=loongarch to the list of maintained targets (though we're still working on getting defconfig building cleanly at the moment; we're pretty close). - Bump ARCH=powerpc from CC=clang to LLVM=1 status. - Promote ARCH=riscv from being Maintained to being Supported. Android is working towards supporting RISC-V, and we have excellent support from multiple companies in this regard. - Note that the toolchain distribution on kernel.org has been built with profile data from kernel builds. - Note how to use ccache with clang.
