This involves: - Changing Torque definition annotations to @cppObjectLayoutDefinition. - Updating C++ headers to inherit from StructLayout and defining fields using TaggedMember. - Implementing inline accessors using TaggedMember methods. - Updating body descriptors and printers/verifiers. - Updating call sites (mostly in builtins and code stub assembler) to use offsetof() or public accessors. - Refactoring verification logic to use a common MicrotaskVerify method. - Minor modification to format-torque.py to format generates expressions that are close to 80 characters. [builtins][pgo] Add helper script to interact with PGO profile bucket We start to host PGO profiles for builtins on a GCP bucket. This script supports various workflows to download profiles for tagged git versions. In a first step, we provide profiles for tagged git versions only. The script identifies this version from the current checkout and downloads (or validates the existence of) the profiles to a directory where they'll be used during build time. We introduce checkout_v8_builtins_pgo_profiles to the DEPS file (defaults to False). If set, we call the new helper script to download the profiles within the gclient sync step. The profile download is added to the Chromium project in crrev.com/c/4131525. [compiler] Make --debug-code the default in debug builds. This enables {FLAG_debug_code} by default in debug builds. The advantage is that generated code contained within the snapshot will contain such debug code. Before we would only get coverage for these pieces with the no-snapshot builds, which have a meager coverage. One can still pass the inverse --no-debug-code flag to ensure generated code remains readable within debug builds as well. [temporal] zoneinfo64 support for Temporal Until now, we have been using temporal_rs' built in timezone data (via the jiff-tzdb crate). However, v8 already contains timezone data in the form of ICU4C's zoneinfo64.res file; we should not duplicate it. In enable-i18n mode, this loads the file using the ICU4C API for it (which, in most cases, returns a pointer to static memory). In non-i18n mode, I wrote a build script that generates a cpp file containing binary data. This needs temporal_rs >= 0.0.15, which is being worked on separately. [logging] Append IDLE_EXTERNAL to StateTag to preserve log compatibility A new VM state IDLE_EXTERNAL was added in https://crrev.com/c/6714365, but inserted in the middle of StateTag enum instead of appended to the end. Because the numeric value of StateTag is written into tick events in V8 log and used to attribute time, inserting a value mid-enum shifted all subsequent state codes (LOGGING changed from 9->10). This CL moves IDLE_EXTERNAL to the end of the enum to restore previous numeric codes for existing states. This is a minimal change that re-establishes compatibility for current and historical logs. Step 1 (of 3-ish): Basic ETW Instrumentation in V8 Design doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xkXj94iExFgLWc_OszTNyNGi523ARaKMWPZTeomhI4U A lot has changed since the last patchset! I recommend revisiting this design doc and reading the parts in green. I explain the roadmap for what changes to expect from ETW instrumentation as well as the instrumentation of this particular CL. I'll do my best to answer any further questions anyone has about my particular instrumentation or ETW in general :) --- This is the first of a series of changelists to round out ETW instrumentation for V8. This changelist represents the most minimal change needed to instrument ETW in V8. In particular, it: - defines and registers the ETW provider, - interacts minimally with the rest of V8, by hooking into the existing TracingController::AddTraceEvent function, - is designed with a platform-agnostic layer, so that event tracers for other platforms can be instrumented in teh future. Some notes on instrumentation (aka I copied stuff from the design doc): We make heavy use of the TraceLogging API to log events. It differs from previous methods of emitting ETW events in that it doesn<E2><80><99>t require the overhead of a separate manifest file to keep track of metadata; rather, events using this API are self-descriptive. Here are the five major steps to instrument the TraceLogging API: - Forward declare the provider (from provider-win.h) - Define the provider in a .cc file (from provider-win.cc) - Register the provider (called from v8.cc). - Write events (called from libplatform/tracing-controller.cc) - Unregister the provider (called from v8.cc) At the base, we have an abstract provider class that encapsulates the functionality of an event provider. These are things like registering and unregistering the provider, and the actual event-logging. The provider class is split into provider-win and provider-mac (currently not instantiated) classes, with OS-dependent implementations of the above functions. In particular, the TraceLogging API is used only in provider-win. It is here that we forward declare and define the provider, as well as write ETW events. Finally, there is a v8-provider class that serves as a top-level API and is exposed to the rest of V8. It acts as a wrapper for the platform-specific providers. The .wprp file is needed so that Windows Performance Recorder knows how to capture our events. Some considerations: - Is TracingController::AddTraceEvent the best place from which to write my events? - Is src/libplatform/tracing the best place to put my instrumentation? - Right now, I fail the preupload because of this, which tells me my files are probably not in the best location: You added one or more #includes that violate checkdeps rules. src\init\v8.cc Illegal include: "src/libplatform/tracing/v8-provider.h" Because of "-src/libplatform" from src's include_rules. TOOLS
This directory contains debugging and investigation tools for V8.
The contents are regularly mirrored to http://v8.dev/tools.
Local Development
For local development you have to start a local webserver under http://localhost:8000:
cd tools/;
npm install;
npm run start-webserver;
Local Symbol Server
The system-analyzer can symbolize profiles for local binaries by running a local symbol server
cd tools/;
./system-analyzer/local-server.sh;
Note that the local symbol server will run nm and objdump and has access to
your files.
