backlight: apple_bl: Use acpi_video_get_backlight_type() On some MacBooks both the apple_bl and the apple-gmux backlight drivers may be able to export a /sys/class/backlight device. To avoid having 2 backlight devices for one LCD panel until now the apple-gmux driver has been calling apple_bl_unregister() to move the apple_bl backlight device out of the way when it loads. Similar problems exist on other x86 laptops and all backlight drivers which may be used on x86 laptops have moved to using acpi_video_get_backlight_type() to determine whether they should load or not. Switch apple_bl to this model too, so that it is consistent with all the other x86 backlight drivers. Besides code-simplification and consistency this has 2 other benefits: 1) It removes a race during boot where userspace will briefly see an apple_bl backlight and then have it disappear again, leading to e.g.: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269920 2) This allows user to switch between the drivers by passing acpi_backlight=apple_gmux or acpi_backlight=vendor on the kernel commandline. spi: make remove callback a void function The value returned by an spi driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.) So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before. fbdev: Split frame buffer support in FB and FB_CORE symbols Currently the CONFIG_FB option has to be enabled even if no legacy fbdev drivers are needed (e.g: only to have support for framebuffer consoles). The DRM subsystem has a fbdev emulation layer, but depends on CONFIG_FB and so it can only be enabled if that dependency is enabled as well. That means fbdev drivers have to be explicitly disabled if users want to enable CONFIG_FB, only to use fbcon and/or the DRM fbdev emulation layer. This patch introduces a non-visible CONFIG_FB_CORE symbol that could be enabled just to have core support needed for CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION, allowing CONFIG_FB to be disabled (and automatically disabling all the fbdev drivers). Nothing from fb_backlight.o and fbmon.o is used by the DRM fbdev emulation layer so these two objects can be compiled out when CONFIG_FB is disabled. backlight: Use backlight_get_brightness() throughout Introduce the backlight_get_brightness() helper in all video/backlight/* drivers. This simplifies the code and align the implementation of the update_status() operation across the different backlight drivers. Some of the drivers gains a little extra functionality by the change as they now respect the fb_blank() ioctl. backlight: ktd253: Switch to use dev_err_probe() helper In the probe path, dev_err() can be replaced with dev_err_probe() which will check if error code is -EPROBE_DEFER and prints the error name. spi: make remove callback a void function The value returned by an spi driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.) So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before. backlight: lm3533_bl: Convert to platform remove callback returning void The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. Since the platform data was only used to convey GPIO information we can delete the platform data header. The DT support never would have worked because there's no platform_data providing ops. There's not any documented binding for it either. backlight: rt4831-backlight: Convert to platform remove callback returning void The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. backlight: Use backlight_get_brightness() throughout Introduce the backlight_get_brightness() helper in all video/backlight/* drivers. This simplifies the code and align the implementation of the update_status() operation across the different backlight drivers. Some of the drivers gains a little extra functionality by the change as they now respect the fb_blank() ioctl.
