Merge tag 'fs.idmapped.v6.3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/idmapping Pull vfs idmapping updates from Christian Brauner: - Last cycle we introduced the dedicated struct mnt_idmap type for mount idmapping and the required infrastucture in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). As promised in last cycle's pull request message this converts everything to rely on struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevant on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this was a potential source for bugs. This finishes the conversion. Instead of passing the plain namespace around this updates all places that currently take a pointer to a mnt_userns with a pointer to struct mnt_idmap. Now that the conversion is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers only accept a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. Conflating mount and other idmappings will now cause the compiler to complain loudly thus eliminating the possibility of any bugs. This makes it impossible for filesystem developers to mix up mount and filesystem idmappings as they are two distinct types and require distinct helpers that cannot be used interchangeably. Everything associated with struct mnt_idmap is moved into a single separate file. With that change no code can poke around in struct mnt_idmap. It can only be interacted with through dedicated helpers. That means all filesystems are and all of the vfs is completely oblivious to the actual implementation of idmappings. We are now also able to extend struct mnt_idmap as we see fit. For example, we can decouple it completely from namespaces for users that don't require or don't want to use them at all. We can also extend the concept of idmappings so we can cover filesystem specific requirements. In combination with the vfs{g,u}id_t work we finished in v6.2 this makes this feature substantially more robust and thus difficult to implement wrong by a given filesystem and also protects the vfs. - Enable idmapped mounts for tmpfs and fulfill a longstanding request. A long-standing request from users had been to make it possible to create idmapped mounts for tmpfs. For example, to share the host's tmpfs mount between multiple sandboxes. This is a prerequisite for some advanced Kubernetes cases. Systemd also has a range of use-cases to increase service isolation. And there are more users of this. However, with all of the other work going on this was way down on the priority list but luckily someone other than ourselves picked this up. As usual the patch is tiny as all the infrastructure work had been done multiple kernel releases ago. In addition to all the tests that we already have I requested that Rodrigo add a dedicated tmpfs testsuite for idmapped mounts to xfstests. It is to be included into xfstests during the v6.3 development cycle. In particular pages are considered free when the refcount hits one rather than zero and refcounts are not added when mapping the page. Tracking this requires special PTE bits (PTE_DEVMAP) and a secondary mechanism for allowing GUP to hold references on the page (see get_dev_pagemap). However there doesn't seem to be any reason why FS DAX pages need their own reference counting scheme. By treating the refcounts on these pages the same way as normal pages we can remove a lot of special checks. In particular pXd_trans_huge() becomes the same as pXd_leaf(), although I haven't made that change here. It also frees up a valuable SW define PTE bit on architectures that have devmap PTE bits defined. It also almost certainly allows further clean-up of the devmap managed functions, but I have left that as a future improvment. It also enables support for compound ZONE_DEVICE pages which is one of my primary motivators for doing this work. This patch (of 20): FS DAX requires file systems to call into the DAX layout prior to unlinking inodes to ensure there is no ongoing DMA or other remote access to the direct mapped page. The fuse file system implements fuse_dax_break_layouts() to do this which includes a comment indicating that passing dmap_end == 0 leads to unmapping of the whole file. However this is not true - passing dmap_end == 0 will not unmap anything before dmap_start, and further more dax_layout_busy_page_range() will not scan any of the range to see if there maybe ongoing DMA access to the range. Fix this by passing -1 for dmap_end to fuse_dax_break_layouts() which will invalidate the entire file range to dax_layout_busy_page_range(). So fuse_notify_store() must be more careful to fully initialize page contents (including parts of the page that are beyond end-of-file) before marking the page uptodate. The current code can leave beyond-EOF page contents uninitialized, which makes these uninitialized page contents visible to userspace via mmap(). This is an information leak, but only affects systems which do not enable init-on-alloc (via CONFIG_INIT_ON_ALLOC_DEFAULT_ON=y or the corresponding kernel command line parameter). This is caused by fuse_setattr() racing with fuse_reverse_inval_inode(). When filesystem server receives setattr request, the client node with valid iattr cached will be required to update the fuse_inode's attr_version and invalidate the cache by fuse_reverse_inval_inode(), and at the next call to ->getattr() they will be fetched from user space. The race scenario is: 1. client-1 sends setattr (iattr-1) request to server 2. client-1 receives the reply from server 3. before client-1 updates iattr-1 to the cached attributes by fuse_change_attributes_common(), server receives another setattr (iattr-2) request from client-2 4. server requests client-1 to update the inode attr_version and invalidate the cached iattr, and iattr-1 becomes staled 5. client-2 receives the reply from server, and caches iattr-2 6. continue with step 2, client-1 invokes fuse_change_attributes_common(), and caches iattr-1 The issue has been observed from concurrent of chmod, chown, or truncate, which all invoke ->setattr() call. The solution is to use fuse_inode's attr_version to check whether the attributes have been modified during the setattr request's lifetime. If so, mark the attributes as invalid in the function fuse_change_attributes_common(). fuse: ioctl: translate ENOSYS in outarg Fuse shouldn't return ENOSYS from its ioctl implementation. If userspace responds with ENOSYS it should be translated to ENOTTY. There are two ways to return an error from the IOCTL request: - fuse_out_header.error - fuse_ioctl_out.result Commit 02c0cab8e734 ("fuse: ioctl: translate ENOSYS") already fixed this issue for the first case, but missed the second case. fuse: cache btime Not all inode attributes are supported by all filesystems, but for the basic stats (which are returned by stat(2) and friends) all of them will have some value, even if that doesn't reflect a real attribute of the file. Btime is different, in that filesystems are free to report or not report a value in statx. If the value is available, then STATX_BTIME bit is set in stx_mask. When caching the value of btime, remember the availability of the attribute as well as the value (if available). This is done by using the FUSE_I_BTIME bit in fuse_inode->state to indicate availability, while using fuse_inode->inval_mask & STATX_BTIME to indicate the state of the cache itself (i.e. set if cache is invalid, and cleared if cache is valid). The existing code uses min_t(ssize_t, outarg.size, XATTR_LIST_MAX) when parsing the FUSE daemon's response to a zero-length getxattr/listxattr request. On 32-bit kernels, where ssize_t and outarg.size are the same size, this is wrong: The min_t() will pass through any size values that are negative when interpreted as signed. fuse_listxattr() will then return this userspace-supplied negative value, which callers will treat as an error value. This kind of bug pattern can lead to fairly bad security bugs because of how error codes are used in the Linux kernel. If a caller were to convert the numeric error into an error pointer, like so: struct foo *func(...) { int len = fuse_getxattr(..., NULL, 0); if (len < 0) return ERR_PTR(len); ... } then it would end up returning this userspace-supplied negative value cast to a pointer - but the caller of this function wouldn't recognize it as an error pointer (IS_ERR_VALUE() only detects values in the narrow range in which legitimate errno values are), and so it would just be treated as a kernel pointer. I think there is at least one theoretical codepath where this could happen, but that path would involve virtio-fs with submounts plus some weird SELinux configuration, so I think it's probably not a concern in practice.
