tools/accounting: handle truncated taskstats netlink messages commit cc82b3dcc6a8fa259fbda12ab00d6fc00908a49e upstream. procacct and getdelays use a fixed receive buffer for taskstats generic netlink messages. A multi-threaded process exit can emit a single PID+TGID notification large enough to exceed that buffer on newer kernels. Switch to recvmsg() so MSG_TRUNC is detected explicitly, increase the message buffer size, and report truncated datagrams clearly instead of misparsing them as fatal netlink errors. Also print the taskstats version in debug output to make version mismatches easier to diagnose while inspecting taskstats traffic. bpftool: Use libbpf error code for flow dissector query [ Upstream commit 8a7f2bff2165e53595d1e91c160b340f978c0ab7 ] bpf_prog_query() returns a negative errno on failure. query_flow_dissector() currently closes the namespace fd and then reads errno to decide whether -EINVAL means that the running kernel does not support flow dissector queries. That errno check controls behavior, not just diagnostics: -EINVAL is handled as a non-fatal old-kernel case, while any other error makes bpftool net fail. The namespace fd is opened read-only, so close() is not expected to commonly fail in normal use. Still, the BPF_PROG_QUERY error is already available in err, and reading errno after an intervening close() is fragile. If close() does change errno, the compatibility branch may be based on close()'s error instead of the BPF_PROG_QUERY result. This was reproduced with an LD_PRELOAD fault injector that forced BPF_PROG_QUERY for BPF_FLOW_DISSECTOR to fail with EINVAL and then forced close() on the netns fd to fail with EIO. The unpatched bpftool reported "can't query prog: Input/output error". With this change, the same injected failure is handled as the intended non-fatal EINVAL compatibility case. Use the libbpf-returned error code instead. Keep the existing errno reset in the non-fatal path to preserve batch mode behavior. The success path is unchanged. selftests/bpf: Add simple strscpy() implementation commit 63c49efc987afefc6b9bb7de083eb8748e0b1789 upstream. Replace bpf_strlcpy() in bpf_util.h with a sized_strscpy(), which is a simplified sized_strscpy() from the kernel (lib/string.c [1]). It: * takes a count (destination size) parameter * guarantees NULL-termination * returns the number of characters copied or -E2BIG Re-define strscpy macro similar to in-kernel implementation [2]: allow the count parameter to be optional. Add #ifdef-s to tools/include/linux/args.h, as they may be defined in other system headers (for example, __CONCAT in sys/cdefs.h). tools/kvm_stat: use canonical ftrace path The canonical location for the tracefs filesystem is at /sys/kernel/tracing. But, from Documentation/trace/ftrace.rst: Before 4.1, all ftrace tracing control files were within the debugfs file system, which is typically located at /sys/kernel/debug/tracing. For backward compatibility, when mounting the debugfs file system, the tracefs file system will be automatically mounted at: /sys/kernel/debug/tracing A comment in kvm_stat still refers to this older debugfs path, so let's update it to avoid confusion. tools lib api: Fix mount_overload() snprintf truncation and toupper range [ Upstream commit fd1f70776add263f8ef38a87ae593c75303f1dcd ] mount_overload() builds an environment variable name like "PERF_SYSFS_ENVIRONMENT" from fs->name. Two bugs: 1) snprintf() uses name_len as the buffer size instead of sizeof(upper_name). For fs->name = "sysfs" (len=5), the output is truncated to "PERF" (4 chars + null), so getenv() never finds the intended variable. 2) mem_toupper() only uppercases name_len bytes, converting just the "PERF" prefix rather than the full string including the filesystem name portion. Fix by using sizeof(upper_name) for snprintf and strlen(upper_name) for mem_toupper, so the full "PERF_SYSFS_ENVIRONMENT" string is correctly formatted and uppercased. tools/memory-model: Fix bug in lock.cat commit 4c830eef806679dc243e191f962c488dd9d00708 upstream. Andrea reported that the following innocuous litmus test: C T {} P0(spinlock_t *x) { int r0; spin_lock(x); spin_unlock(x); r0 = spin_is_locked(x); } gives rise to a nonsensical empty result with no executions: $ herd7 -conf linux-kernel.cfg T.litmus Test T Required States 0 Ok Witnesses Positive: 0 Negative: 0 Condition forall (true) Observation T Never 0 0 Time T 0.00 Hash=6fa204e139ddddf2cb6fa963bad117c0 The problem is caused by a bug in the lock.cat part of the LKMM. Its computation of the rf relation for RU (read-unlocked) events is faulty; it implicitly assumes that every RU event must read from either a UL (unlock) event in another thread or from the lock's initial state. Neither is true in the litmus test above, so the computation yields no possible executions. The lock.cat code tries to make up for this deficiency by allowing RU events outside of critical sections to read from the last po-previous UL event. But it does this incorrectly, trying to keep these rfi links separate from the rfe links that might also be needed, and passing only the latter to herd7's cross() macro. The problem is fixed by merging the two sets of possible rf links for RU events and using them all in the call to cross(). objtool: Remove max symbol name length limitation [ Upstream commit f404a58dcf0c862b05602f641ce5fdd8b98fbc3a ] If one of the symbols processed by read_symbols() happens to have a .cold variant with a name longer than objtool's MAX_NAME_LEN limit, the build fails. Covert as follows: $(if A,A,B) --> $(or A,B) This patch also converts: $(if A, A, B) --> $(or A, B) Strictly speaking, the latter is not an equivalent conversion because GNU Make keeps spaces after commas; if A is not empty, $(if A, A, B) expands to " A", while $(or A, B) expands to "A". workqueue: Implement non-strict affinity scope for unbound workqueues An unbound workqueue can be served by multiple worker_pools to improve locality. The segmentation is achieved by grouping CPUs into pods. By default, the cache boundaries according to cpus_share_cache() define the CPUs are grouped. Let's a workqueue is allowed to run on all CPUs and the system has two L3 caches. The workqueue would be mapped to two worker_pools each serving one L3 cache domains. While this improves locality, because the pod boundaries are strict, it limits the total bandwidth a given issuer can consume. For example, let's say there is a thread pinned to a CPU issuing enough work items to saturate the whole machine. With the machine segmented into two pods, no matter how many work items it issues, it can only use half of the CPUs on the system. While this limitation has existed for a very long time, it wasn't very pronounced because the affinity grouping used to be always by NUMA nodes. With cache boundaries as the default and support for even finer grained scopes (smt and cpu), it is now an a lot more pressing problem. This patch implements non-strict affinity scope where the pod boundaries aren't enforced strictly. Going back to the previous example, the workqueue would still be mapped to two worker_pools; however, the affinity enforcement would be soft. The workers in both pools would have their cpus_allowed set to the whole machine thus allowing the scheduler to migrate them anywhere on the machine. However, whenever an idle worker is woken up, the workqueue code asks the scheduler to bring back the task within the pod if the worker is outside. ie. work items start executing within its affinity scope but can be migrated outside as the scheduler sees fit. This removes the hard cap on utilization while maintaining the benefits of affinity scopes. After the earlier ->__pod_cpumask changes, the implementation is pretty simple. When non-strict which is the new default: * pool_allowed_cpus() returns @pool->attrs->cpumask instead of ->__pod_cpumask so that the workers are allowed to run on any CPU that the associated workqueues allow. * If the idle worker task's ->wake_cpu is outside the pod, kick_pool() sets the field to a CPU within the pod. This would be the first use of task_struct->wake_cpu outside scheduler proper, so it isn't clear whether this would be acceptable. However, other methods of migrating tasks are significantly more expensive and are likely prohibitively so if we want to do this on every work item. This needs discussion with scheduler folks. There is also a race window where setting ->wake_cpu wouldn't be effective as the target task is still on CPU. However, the window is pretty small and this being a best-effort optimization, it doesn't seem to warrant more complexity at the moment. While the non-strict cache affinity scopes seem to be the best option, the performance picture interacts with the affinity scope and is a bit complicated to fully discuss in this patch, so the behavior is made easily selectable through wqattrs and sysfs and the next patch will add documentation to discuss performance implications. v2: pool->attrs->affn_strict is set to true for per-cpu worker_pools.
