block: move block exports to libblockdev Block exports are used by softmmu, qemu-storage-daemon, and qemu-nbd. They are not used by other programs and are not otherwise needed in libblock. Undo the recent move of blockdev-nbd.c from blockdev_ss into block_ss. Since bdrv_close_all() (libblock) calls blk_exp_close_all() (libblockdev) a stub function is required.. Make qemu-nbd.c use signal handling utility functions instead of duplicating the code. This helps because os-posix.c is in libblockdev and it depends on a qemu_system_killed() symbol that qemu-nbd.c lacks. Once we use the signal handling utility functions we also end up providing the necessary symbol. sysemu: Split sysemu/runstate.h off sysemu/sysemu.h sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related to the system-emulator. Evidence: * It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits). * It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers. Split stuff related to run state management into its own header sysemu/runstate.h. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400 to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects. Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also add qemu/main-loop.h. stubs: add stubs for io_uring interface Follow linux-aio.o and stub out the block/io_uring.o APIs that will be missing when a binary is linked with obj-util-y but without block-util-y (e.g. vhost-user-gpu). For example, the stubs are necessary so that a binary using util/async.o from obj-util-y for qemu_bh_new() links successfully. In this case block/io_uring.o from block-util-y isn't needed and we can avoid dragging in the block layer by linking the stubs instead. The stub functions never get called. main-loop.h: introduce qemu_in_main_thread() When invoked from the main loop, this function is the same as qemu_mutex_iothread_locked, and returns true if the BQL is held. When invoked from iothreads or tests, it returns true only if the current AioContext is the Main Loop. This essentially just extends qemu_mutex_iothread_locked to work also in unit tests or other users like storage-daemon, that run in the Main Loop but end up using the implementation in stubs/iothread-lock.c. Using qemu_mutex_iothread_locked in unit tests defaults to false because they use the implementation in stubs/iothread-lock, making all assertions added in next patches fail despite the AioContext is still the main loop. See the comment in the function header for more information. system/cpus: rename qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() to bql_lock() The Big QEMU Lock (BQL) has many names and they are confusing. The actual QemuMutex variable is called qemu_global_mutex but it's commonly referred to as the BQL in discussions and some code comments. The locking APIs, however, are called qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() and qemu_mutex_unlock_iothread(). The "iothread" name is historic and comes from when the main thread was split into into KVM vcpu threads and the "iothread" (now called the main loop thread). I have contributed to the confusion myself by introducing a separate --object iothread, a separate concept unrelated to the BQL. The "iothread" name is no longer appropriate for the BQL. Rename the locking APIs to: - void bql_lock(void) - void bql_unlock(void) - bool bql_locked(void) There are more APIs with "iothread" in their names. Subsequent patches will rename them. There are also comments and documentation that will be updated in later patches. linux-aio: properly bubble up errors from initialization laio_init() can fail for a couple of reasons, which will lead to a NULL pointer dereference in laio_attach_aio_context(). To solve this, add a aio_setup_linux_aio() function which is called early in raw_open_common. If this fails, propagate the error up. The signature of aio_get_linux_aio() was not modified, because it seems preferable to return the actual errno from the possible failing initialization calls. Additionally, when the AioContext changes, we need to associate a LinuxAioState with the new AioContext. Use the bdrv_attach_aio_context callback and call the new aio_setup_linux_aio(), which will allocate a new AioContext if needed, and return errors on failures. If it fails for any reason, fallback to threaded AIO with an error message, as the device is already in-use by the guest. Add an assert that aio_get_linux_aio() cannot return NULL. memory-device,vhost: Support automatic decision on the number of memslots We want to support memory devices that can automatically decide how many memslots they will use. In the worst case, they have to use a single memslot. The target use cases are virtio-mem and the hyper-v balloon. Let's calculate a reasonable limit such a memory device may use, and instruct the device to make a decision based on that limit. Use a simple heuristic that considers: * A memslot soft-limit for all memory devices of 256; also, to not consume too many memslots -- which could harm performance. * Actually still free and unreserved memslots * The percentage of the remaining device memory region that memory device will occupy. Further, while we properly check before plugging a memory device whether there still is are free memslots, we have other memslot consumers (such as boot memory, PCI BARs) that don't perform any checks and might dynamically consume memslots without any prior reservation. So we might succeed in plugging a memory device, but once we dynamically map a PCI BAR we would be in trouble. Doing accounting / reservation / checks for all such users is problematic (e.g., sometimes we might temporarily split boot memory into two memslots, triggered by the BIOS). We use the historic magic memslot number of 509 as orientation to when supporting 256 memory devices -> memslots (leaving 253 for boot memory and other devices) has been proven to work reliable. We'll fallback to suggesting a single memslot if we don't have at least 509 total memslots. Plugging vhost devices with less than 509 memslots available while we have memory devices plugged that consume multiple memslots due to automatic decisions can be problematic. Most configurations might just fail due to "limit < used + reserved", however, it can also happen that these memory devices would suddenly consume memslots that would actually be required by other memslot consumers (boot, PCI BARs) later. Note that this has always been sketchy with vhost devices that support only a small number of memslots; but we don't want to make it any worse. So let's keep it simple and simply reject plugging such vhost devices in such a configuration. Eventually, all vhost devices that want to be fully compatible with such memory devices should support a decent number of memslots (>= 509). stubs: add qemu_ram_block_from_host() and qemu_ram_get_fd() The blkio block driver will need to look up the file descriptor for a given pointer. This is possible in softmmu builds where the RAMBlock API is available for querying guest RAM. Add stubs so tools like qemu-img that link the block layer still build successfully. In this case there is no guest RAM but that is fine. cpu-timers, icount: new modules refactoring of cpus.c continues with cpu timer state extraction. cpu-timers: responsible for the softmmu cpu timers state, including cpu clocks and ticks. icount: counts the TCG instructions executed. As such it is specific to the TCG accelerator. Therefore, it is built only under CONFIG_TCG. One complication is due to qtest, which uses an icount field to warp time as part of qtest (qtest_clock_warp). In order to solve this problem, provide a separate counter for qtest. This requires fixing assumptions scattered in the code that qtest_enabled() implies icount_enabled(), checking each specific case. replay: Extract core API to 'exec/replay-core.h' replay API is used deeply within TCG common code (common to user and system emulation). Unfortunately "sysemu/replay.h" requires some QAPI headers for few system-specific declarations, example: void replay_input_event(QemuConsole *src, InputEvent *evt); Since commit c2651c0eaa ("qapi/meson: Restrict UI module to system emulation and tools") the QAPI header defining the InputEvent is not generated anymore. To keep it simple, extract the 'core' replay prototypes to a new "exec/replay-core.h" header which we include in the TCG code that doesn't need the rest of the replay API. qapi: introduce x-query-usb QMP command This is a counterpart to the HMP "info usb" command. It is being added with an "x-" prefix because this QMP command is intended as an adhoc debugging tool and will thus not be modelled in QAPI as fully structured data, nor will it have long term guaranteed stability.
