accel/qaic: Add documentation for AIC100 accelerator driver The Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 (AIC100) device is an Artificial Intelligence accelerator PCIe card. It contains a number of components both in the SoC and on the card which facilitate running workloads: QSM: management processor NSPs: workload compute units DMA Bridge: dedicated data mover for the workloads MHI: multiplexed communication channels DDR: workload storage and memory The Linux kernel driver for AIC100 is called "QAIC" and is located in the accel subsystem. cpufreq: Documentation: fix conservative governor freq_step description [ Upstream commit 03120e1425262c7d11f93362a88e579a1720390b ] The conservative governor documentation incorrectly states that setting freq_step to 0 will use the default 5% frequency step. arm64: errata: Mitigate TLBI errata on Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 CPU commit 1940e70a8144bf75e6df26bf6f600862ea7f7ea1 upstream. Commit fb091ff39479 ("arm64: Subscribe Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 to ARM Neoverse N2 errata") states that Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 CPU "is a Microsoft implemented CPU based on r0p0 of the ARM Neoverse N2 CPU, and therefore suffers from all the same errata.". So enable the workaround for the latest broadcast TLB invalidation bug on these parts. bpf: Adjust free target to avoid global starvation of LRU map [ Upstream commit d4adf1c9ee7722545450608bcb095fb31512f0c6 ] BPF_MAP_TYPE_LRU_HASH can recycle most recent elements well before the map is full, due to percpu reservations and force shrink before neighbor stealing. Once a CPU is unable to borrow from the global map, it will once steal one elem from a neighbor and after that each time flush this one element to the global list and immediately recycle it. Batch value LOCAL_FREE_TARGET (128) will exhaust a 10K element map with 79 CPUs. CPU 79 will observe this behavior even while its neighbors hold 78 * 127 + 1 * 15 == 9921 free elements (99%). CPUs need not be active concurrently. The issue can appear with affinity migration, e.g., irqbalance. Each CPU can reserve and then hold onto its 128 elements indefinitely. Avoid global list exhaustion by limiting aggregate percpu caches to half of map size, by adjusting LOCAL_FREE_TARGET based on cpu count. This change has no effect on sufficiently large tables. Similar to LOCAL_NR_SCANS and lru->nr_scans, introduce a map variable lru->free_target. The extra field fits in a hole in struct bpf_lru. The cacheline is already warm where read in the hot path. The field is only accessed with the lru lock held. crypto: af_alg - Remove zero-copy support from skcipher and aead The zero-copy support is one of the riskiest aspects of AF_ALG. It allows userspace to request cryptographic operations directly on pagecache pages of files like the 'su' binary. It also allows userspace to concurrently modify the memory which is being operated on, a recipe for TOCTOU vulnerabilities. While zero-copy support is more valuable in other areas of the kernel like the frequently used networking and file I/O code, it has far less value in AF_ALG, which is a niche UAPI. AF_ALG primarily just exists for backwards compatibility with a small set of userspace programs such as 'iwd' that haven't yet been fixed to use userspace crypto code. Originally AF_ALG was intended to be used to access hardware crypto accelerators. However, it isn't an efficient interface for that anyway, and it turned out to be rarely used in this way in practice. Thus, the risks of the zero-copy support in AF_ALG vastly outweigh its benefits. Let's just remove it. This commit removes it from the "skcipher" and "aead" algorithm types. "hash" will be handled separately. This is a soft break, not a hard break. Even after this commit, it still works to use splice() or sendfile() to transfer data to an AF_ALG request socket from a pipe or any file, respectively. What changes is just that the kernel now makes an internal, stable copy of the data before doing the crypto operation. So performance is slightly reduced, but the UAPI isn't broken. And, very importantly, it's much safer. Tested with libkcapi/test.sh. All its test cases still pass. I also verified that this would have prevented the copy.fail exploit as well. I also used a custom test program to verify that sendfile() still works. PCI: Move Resizable BAR code to rebar.c [ Upstream commit 9f71938cd77f32a448f40a288e409eca60e55486 ] For lack of a better place to put it, Resizable BAR code has been placed inside pci.c and setup-res.c that do not use it for anything. Upcoming changes are going to add more Resizable BAR related functions, increasing the code size. Use FENCE.I for providing core serialization as follows: - by calling sync_core_before_usermode() on return from interrupt (cf. ipi_sync_core()), - via switch_mm() and sync_core_before_usermode() (respectively, for uthread->uthread and kthread->uthread transitions) before returning to user-space. On RISC-V, the serialization in switch_mm() is activated by resetting the icache_stale_mask of the mm at prepare_sync_core_cmd(). Documentation: ACPI: Fix parent device references commit e65cb011349e653ded541dddd6469c2ca813edcf upstream. The _CRS resources in many cases want to have ResourceSource field to be a type of ACPI String. This means that to compile properly we need to enclosure the name path into double quotes. This will in practice defer the interpretation to a run-time stage, However, this may be interpreted differently on different OSes and ACPI interpreter implementations. In particular ACPICA might not correctly recognize the leading '^' (caret) character and will not resolve the relative name path properly. On top of that, this piece may be used in SSDTs which are loaded after the DSDT and on itself may also not resolve relative name paths outside of their own scopes. With this all said, fix documentation to use fully-qualified name paths always to avoid any misinterpretations, which is proven to work. docs: add SVG version of the Linux logo In the Rust for Linux patch series, Jonathan Corbet requested [1] that we avoid binary assets (such as the logo), possibly by recreating them in SVG format. However, it turns out there is no SVG version of the Linux logo in the kernel tree yet, only a GIF one from the pre-v2.0.0 days. This patch fixes that by adding a SVG version of the Linux logo, which we could then use in the Rust for Linux documentation and other similar places. This is a vector re-illustration by Garrett LeSage of the original logo by Larry Ewing, plus cleanups by IFo Hancroft. Documentation: Add document for false sharing When doing performance tuning or debugging performance regressions, more and more cases are found to be related to false sharing [1][2][3], and the situation can be worse for newer platforms with hundreds of CPUs. There are already many commits in current kernel specially for mitigating the performance degradation due to false sharing. False sharing could harm the performance silently without being noticed, due to reasons like: * data members of a big data structure randomly sitting together in one cache line * global data of small size are linked compactly together So it's better to make a simple document about the normal pattern of false sharing, basic ways to mitigate it and call out to developers to pay attention during code-writing. Let's remove the remaining "compound" terminology by making COMPOUND_MAPPED match the "folio->_entire_mapcount" terminology, renaming it to ENTIRELY_MAPPED. ENTIRELY_MAPPED is only used when the whole folio is mapped using a single page table entry (e.g., a single PMD mapping a PMD-sized THP). For now, we don't support mapping any THP bigger than that, so ENTIRELY_MAPPED only applies to PMD-mapped PMD-sized THP only. docs: add some directories to the main documentation index The contents of those directories were orphaned at the documentation body. While those directories could likely be moved to be inside some guide, I'm opting to just adding their indexes to the main one, removing the :orphan: and adding the SPDX header. For the drivers, the rationale is that the documentation contains a mix of Kernelspace, uAPI and admin-guide. So, better to keep them on separate directories, as we've be doing with similar subsystem-specific docs that were not split yet. For the others, well... I'm too lazy to do the move. Also, it seems to make sense to keep at least some of those at the main dir (like kbuild, for example). In any case, a latter patch could do the move. handshake: Require admin permission for DONE command [ Upstream commit 81246a65303d9635266b1334490142caaf86a11f ] ACCEPT and DONE are the two downcalls of the handshake genl family, both intended for use by the trusted handshake agent (tlshd). ACCEPT already requires GENL_ADMIN_PERM; DONE has no privilege check at all. The fd-lookup in handshake_nl_done_doit() only confirms that some pending handshake request exists for the supplied sockfd; it does not authenticate the sender. An unprivileged process that guesses or observes a valid sockfd can therefore submit a DONE with HANDSHAKE_A_DONE_STATUS == 0, leaving the kernel consumer to proceed as if the handshake succeeded. A non-zero status on a forged DONE tears down a legitimate in-flight handshake before tlshd can report its real result. PM: runtime: Simplify pm_runtime_get_if_active() usage [ Upstream commit c0ef3df8dbaef51ee4cfd58a471adf2eaee6f6b3 ] There are two ways to opportunistically increment a device's runtime PM usage count, calling either pm_runtime_get_if_active() or pm_runtime_get_if_in_use(). The former has an argument to tell whether to ignore the usage count or not, and the latter simply calls the former with ign_usage_count set to false. The other users that want to ignore the usage_count will have to explicitly set that argument to true which is a bit cumbersome. To make this function more practical to use, remove the ign_usage_count argument from the function. The main implementation is in a static function called pm_runtime_get_conditional() and implementations of pm_runtime_get_if_active() and pm_runtime_get_if_in_use() are moved to runtime.c. Align git commit ID abbreviation guidelines and checks [Upstream commit 6356f18f09dc0781650c4f128ea48745fa48c415] The guidelines for git commit ID abbreviation are inconsistent: some places state to use 12 characters exactly, while other places recommend 12 characters or more. The same issue is present in the checkpatch.pl script. E.g. Documentation/dev-tools/checkpatch.rst says: **GIT_COMMIT_ID** The proper way to reference a commit id is: commit <12+ chars of sha1> ("<title line>") However, scripts/checkpatch.pl has two different checks: one warning check accepting 12 characters exactly: # Check Fixes: styles is correct Please use correct Fixes: style 'Fixes: <12 chars of sha1> (\"<title line>\")' and a second error check accepting 12-40 characters: # Check for git id commit length and improperly formed commit descriptions # A correctly formed commit description is: # commit <SHA-1 hash length 12+ chars> ("Complete commit subject") Please use git commit description style 'commit <12+ chars of sha1> Hence patches containing commit IDs with more than 12 characters are flagged by checkpatch, and sometimes rejected by maintainers or reviewers. This is becoming more important with the growth of the repository, as git may decide to use more characters in case of local conflicts. Fix this by settling on at least 12 characters, in both the documentation and in the checkpatch.pl script. xz: remove XZ_EXTERN and extern from functions mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.12-rc1 category: feature XZ_EXTERN was used to make internal functions static in the preboot code. However, in other decompressors this hasn't been done. On x86-64, this makes no difference to the kernel image size. Omit XZ_EXTERN and let some of the internal functions be extern in the preboot code. Omitting XZ_EXTERN from include/linux/xz.h fixes warnings in "make htmldocs" and makes the intradocument links to xz_dec functions work in Documentation/staging/xz.rst. The alternative would have been to add "XZ_EXTERN" to c_id_attributes in Documentation/conf.py but omitting XZ_EXTERN seemed cleaner. sched/isolation: Prevent boot crash when the boot CPU is nohz_full Documentation/timers/no_hz.rst states that the "nohz_full=" mask must not include the boot CPU, which is no longer true after: 08ae95f4fd3b ("nohz_full: Allow the boot CPU to be nohz_full"). However after: aae17ebb53cd ("workqueue: Avoid using isolated cpus' timers on queue_delayed_work") the kernel will crash at boot time in this case; housekeeping_any_cpu() returns an invalid CPU number until smp_init() brings the first housekeeping CPU up. Change housekeeping_any_cpu() to check the result of cpumask_any_and() and return smp_processor_id() in this case. This is just the simple and backportable workaround which fixes the symptom, but smp_processor_id() at boot time should be safe at least for type == HK_TYPE_TIMER, this more or less matches the tick_do_timer_boot_cpu logic. There is no worry about cpu_down(); tick_nohz_cpu_down() will not allow to offline tick_do_timer_cpu (the 1st online housekeeping CPU). LoongArch: Add AVEC irqchip support commit ae16f05c928a1336d5d9d19fd805d7bf29c3f0c8 upstream. Introduce the advanced extended interrupt controllers (AVECINTC). This feature will allow each core to have 256 independent interrupt vectors and MSI interrupts can be independently routed to any vector on any CPU. crypto: qat - remove unused character device and IOCTLs [ Upstream commit d237230728c567297f2f98b425d63156ab2ed17f ] The QAT driver exposes a character device (qat_adf_ctl) with IOCTLs for device configuration, start, stop, status query and enumeration. These IOCTLs are not part of any public uAPI header and have no known in-tree or out-of-tree users. Device lifecycle is already managed via sysfs. The ioctl interface also increases the attack surface and is the subject of a number of bug reports. Remove the character device, the IOCTL definitions, and the related data structures (adf_dev_status_info, adf_user_cfg_key_val, adf_user_cfg_section, adf_user_cfg_ctl_data). Drop the now-unused adf_cfg_user.h header and strip adf_ctl_drv.c down to the minimal module_init/module_exit hooks for workqueue, AER, and crypto/compression algorithm registration. Clean up leftover dead code that was only reachable from the removed IOCTL paths: adf_cfg_del_all(), adf_devmgr_verify_id(), adf_devmgr_get_num_dev(), adf_devmgr_get_dev_by_id(), adf_get_vf_real_id() and the unused ADF_CFG macros. Additionally, drop the entry associated to QAT IOCTLs in ioctl-number.rst. docs: add back 'Documentation/Changes' file (as symlink) Jaegeuk Kim reports that the debian kernel package build gets confused by the lack of Documentation/Changes file. We also refer to that path name in ver_linux and various how-to files and Kconfig files. The file got renamed away in commit 186128f75392 ("docs-rst: add documents to development-process"), and as Jaegeuk Kim points out, the commit message for that change says "use symlinks instead of renames", but then the commit itself actually does renames after all. Maybe we should do the other files too, but for now this just adds the minimal symlink back to the historical name, so that people looking for Documentation/Changes will actually find what they are looking for, and the debian scripts continue to work. wait_on_bit: add an acquire memory barrier There are several places in the kernel where wait_on_bit is not followed by a memory barrier (for example, in drivers/md/dm-bufio.c:new_read). On architectures with weak memory ordering, it may happen that memory accesses that follow wait_on_bit are reordered before wait_on_bit and they may return invalid data. Fix this class of bugs by introducing a new function "test_bit_acquire" that works like test_bit, but has acquire memory ordering semantics. docs: Restore "smart quotes" for quotes [ Upstream commit fe2562582bffe675721e77e00b3bf5bfa1d7aeab ] Commit eaae75754d81 ("docs: turn off "smart quotes" in the HTML build") disabled conversion of quote marks along with that of dashes. Despite the short summary, the change affects not only HTML build but also other build targets including PDF. However, as "smart quotes" had been enabled for more than half a decade already, quite a few readers of HTML pages are likely expecting conversions of "foo" -> “foo” and 'bar' -> ‘bar’. Furthermore, in LaTeX typesetting convention, it is common to use distinct marks for opening and closing quote marks. To satisfy such readers' expectation, restore conversion of quotes only by setting smartquotes_action [1]. locking/memory-barriers.txt: Improve documentation for writel() example The cited commit describes that when using writel(), explicit wmb() is not needed. wmb() is an expensive barrier. writel() uses the needed platform specific barrier instead of wmb(). writeX() section of "KERNEL I/O BARRIER EFFECTS" already describes ordering of I/O accessors with MMIO writes.
