The parser was incorrectly treating the length field as the boolean value. Per RFC 5280 section 4.1, X.509 certificates must use ASN.1 DER encoding. UPSTREAM: genirq: Add irq_chip_(startup/shutdown)_parent() As the MSI controller on SG2044 uses PLIC as the underlying interrupt controller, it needs to call irq_enable() and irq_disable() to startup/shutdown interrupts. Otherwise, the MSI interrupt can not be startup correctly and will not respond any incoming interrupt. Introduce irq_chip_startup_parent() and irq_chip_shutdown_parent() to allow the interrupt controller to call the irq_startup()/irq_shutdown() callbacks of the parent interrupt chip. In case the irq_startup()/irq_shutdown() callbacks are not implemented for the parent interrupt chip, this will fallback to irq_chip_enable_parent() or irq_chip_disable_parent(). filemap: move prefaulting out of hot write path mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.14 category: performance There is a generic anti-pattern that shows up in the VFS and several filesystems where the hot write paths touch userspace twice when they could get away with doing it once. Dave Chinner suggested that they should all be fixed up[1]. I agree[2]. But, the series to do that fixup spans a bunch of filesystems and a lot of people. This patch fixes common code that absolutely everyone uses. It has measurable performance benefits[3]. I think this patch can go in and not be held up by the others. I originally wrote 998ef75ddb57 ("fs: do not prefault sys_write() user buffer pages") to fix a performance issue that showed up on early SMAP hardware. But that was reverted with 00a3d660cbac because it exposed an underlying filesystem bug. This is a reimplementation of the original commit along with some simplification and comment improvements. The basic problem is that the generic write path has two userspace accesses: one to prefault the write source buffer and then another to perform the actual write. On x86, this means an extra STAC/CLAC pair. These are relatively expensive instructions because they function as barriers. Keep the prefaulting behavior but move it into the slow path that gets run when the write did not make any progress. This avoids livelocks that can happen when the write's source and destination target the same folio. Contrary to the existing comments, the fault-in does not prevent deadlocks. That's accomplished by using an "atomic" usercopy that disables page faults. tcp: use RCU lookup in __inet_hash_connect() When __inet_hash_connect() has to try many 4-tuples before finding an available one, we see a high spinlock cost from the many spin_lock_bh(&head->lock) performed in its loop. AOSCOS: kvm: disable enable_virt_at_load by default Disable enable_virt_at_load, a >= 6.12 on-by-default parameter introduced with commit b4886fab6fb6 ("KVM: Add a module param to allow enabling virtualization when KVM is loaded"). By enabling this paramter, VirtualBox (as of 7.1.4) will fail to launch any virtualised systems with the following error: VirtualBox can't operate in VMX root mode. Please disable the KVM kernel extension, recompile your kernel and reboot (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE). The original commit indicated that this was introduced to reduce latency during KVM initialisation and that it "could be problematic for use case that need to spin up VMs quickly." An optimisation that is more than likely unnecessary for our (predominantly desktop-oriented) crowd. Bottom line - make VirtualBox work again (until they come up with a fix). For instance, Clippy should not suggest using let ... else in a lint if the MSRV did not implement that syntax. If the MSRV is not provided, Clippy will assume all features are available. Thus enable it with the minimum Rust version the kernel supports. Note that there is currently a small disadvantage in doing so: since we still use unstable features that nevertheless work in the range of versions we support (e.g. #[expect(...)]), we lose suggestions for those. However, over time we will stop using unstable features (especially language and library ones) as it is our goal, thus, in the end, we will want to have the msrv set. Rust is also considering adding a similar feature in rustc too, which we should probably enable if it becomes available [2]. scripts: add Linux .cocciconfig for coccinelle Coccinelle supports reading .cocciconfig, the order of precedence for variables for .cocciconfig is as follows: o Your current user's home directory is processed first o Your directory from which spatch is called is processed next o The directory provided with the --dir option is processed last, if used Since coccicheck runs through make, it naturally runs from the kernel proper dir, as such the second rule above would be implied for picking up a .cocciconfig when using 'make coccicheck'. 'make coccicheck' also supports using M= targets.If you do not supply any M= target, it is assumed you want to target the entire kernel. The kernel coccicheck script has: if [ "$KBUILD_EXTMOD" = "" ] ; then OPTIONS="--dir $srctree $COCCIINCLUDE" else OPTIONS="--dir $KBUILD_EXTMOD $COCCIINCLUDE" fi KBUILD_EXTMOD is set when an explicit target with M= is used. For both cases the spatch --dir argument is used, as such third rule applies when whether M= is used or not, and when M= is used the target directory can have its own .cocciconfig file. When M= is not passed as an argument to coccicheck the target directory is the same as the directory from where spatch was called. If not using the kernel's coccicheck target, keep the above precedence order logic of .cocciconfig reading. If using the kernel's coccicheck target, override any of the kernel's .coccicheck's settings using SPFLAGS. We help Coccinelle when used against Linux with a set of sensible defaults options for Linux with our own Linux .cocciconfig. This hints to coccinelle git can be used for 'git grep' queries over coccigrep. A timeout of 200 seconds should suffice for now. The options picked up by coccinelle when reading a .cocciconfig do not appear as arguments to spatch processes running on your system, to confirm what options will be used by Coccinelle run: spatch --print-options-only You can override with your own preferred index option by using SPFLAGS. Coccinelle supports both glimpse and idutils. Glimpse had historically provided the best performance, however recent benchmarks reveal idutils is performing just as well. Due to some recent fixes however you however will need at least coccinelle >= 1.0.6 if using idutils. Coccinelle carries a script scripts/idutils_index.sh which creates the idutils database with as follows: mkid -i C --output .id-utils.index If using just "--use-idutils" coccinelle expects your idutils database to be on the top level of the kernel as a file named ".id-utils.index". If you do not use this you can symlink your database file to it, or you can specify the database file following the "--use-idutils" argument. Examples: make SPFLAGS=--use-idutils coccicheck This assumes you have $srctree/.id-utils.index, where $srctree is the top level of the kernel. make SPFLAGS="--use-idutils /full-path/to/ID" coccicheck Here you specify the full path of the idutils ID database. .editorconfig: remove trim_trailing_whitespace option Some editors (like the vim variants), when seeing "trim_whitespace" decide to do just that for all of the whitespace in the file you are saving, even if it is not on a line that you have modified. This plays havoc with diffs and is NOT something that should be intended. As the "only trim whitespace on modified lines" is not part of the editorconfig standard yet, just delete these lines from the .editorconfig file so that we don't end up with diffs that are automatically rejected by maintainers for containing things they shouldn't. Add Jeff Kirsher to .get_maintainer.ignore Jeff was retired as the Intel driver maintainer in commit 6667df916fce ("MAINTAINERS: Update MAINTAINERS for Intel ethernet drivers"), and his address bounces. But he has signed-off a lot of patches over the years so get_maintainer insists on CCing him. We haven't heard from him since he left Intel, so remapping the address via mailmap is also pointless. rust: introduce .clippy.toml commit 7d56786edcbdf58b6367fd7f01d5861214ad1c95 upstream. Some Clippy lints can be configured/tweaked. We will use these knobs to our advantage in later commits. This is done via a configuration file, .clippy.toml [1]. The file is currently unstable. This may be a problem in the future, but we can adapt as needed. In addition, we proposed adding Clippy to the Rust CI's RFL job [2], so we should be able to catch issues pre-merge. Thus introduce the file. kbuild: ensure full rebuild when the compiler is updated Commit 21c54b774744 ("kconfig: show compiler version text in the top comment") added the environment variable, CC_VERSION_TEXT in the comment of the top Kconfig file. It can detect the compiler update, and invoke the syncconfig because all environment variables referenced in Kconfig files are recorded in include/config/auto.conf.cmd This commit makes it a CONFIG option in order to ensure the full rebuild when the compiler is updated. This works like follows: include/config/kconfig.h contains "CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT" in the comment block. The top Makefile specifies "-include $(srctree)/include/linux/kconfig.h" to guarantee it is included from all kernel source files. fixdep parses every source file and all headers included from it, searching for words prefixed with "CONFIG_". Then, fixdep finds CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT in include/config/kconfig.h and adds include/config/cc/version/text.h into every .*.cmd file. When the compiler is updated, syncconfig is invoked because init/Kconfig contains the reference to the environment variable CC_VERTION_TEXT. CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT is updated to the new version string, and include/config/cc/version/text.h is touched. In the next rebuild, Make will rebuild every files since the timestamp of include/config/cc/version/text.h is newer than that of target.
