selftests/alsa: Fix memory leak in find_controls error path [ Upstream commit cb89f0c1aed02eb233c4271f76f830b37e222ff6 ] In find_controls(), card_data is allocated with malloc() but when snd_ctl_open_lconf() fails, the code jumps to next_card without freeing the allocated memory. This results in a memory leak for each card where snd_ctl_open_lconf() fails. Add free(card_data) before goto next_card to ensure proper cleanup of the allocated memory in the error path. It should be caused by the write function is not successfully returned before the system suspend and the return value get messed when waking up. As a result, It may be better to check the time passed of those few instructions to determine whether the suspend is executed correctly for it is pretty hard to execute those few lines for 5 seconds. The timer to wake up the system is set to expire after 5 seconds and no re-arm. If the timer remaining time is 0 second and 0 nano secomd, it means the timer expired and wake the system up. Otherwise, the system could be considered to enter the suspend state failed if there is any remaining time. After appling this patch, the test would not fail for it believes the system does not go to suspend by mistake. It now could continue to the rest part of the test after suspend. fix bitmap corruption on close_range() with CLOSE_RANGE_UNSHARE commit 9a2fa1472083580b6c66bdaf291f591e1170123a upstream. copy_fd_bitmaps(new, old, count) is expected to copy the first count/BITS_PER_LONG bits from old->full_fds_bits[] and fill the rest with zeroes. What it does is copying enough words (BITS_TO_LONGS(count/BITS_PER_LONG)), then memsets the rest. That works fine, *if* all bits past the cutoff point are clear. Otherwise we are risking garbage from the last word we'd copied. For most of the callers that is true - expand_fdtable() has count equal to old->max_fds, so there's no open descriptors past count, let alone fully occupied words in ->open_fds[], which is what bits in ->full_fds_bits[] correspond to. The other caller (dup_fd()) passes sane_fdtable_size(old_fdt, max_fds), which is the smallest multiple of BITS_PER_LONG that covers all opened descriptors below max_fds. In the common case (copying on fork()) max_fds is ~0U, so all opened descriptors will be below it and we are fine, by the same reasons why the call in expand_fdtable() is safe. Unfortunately, there is a case where max_fds is less than that and where we might, indeed, end up with junk in ->full_fds_bits[] - close_range(from, to, CLOSE_RANGE_UNSHARE) with * descriptor table being currently shared * 'to' being above the current capacity of descriptor table * 'from' being just under some chunk of opened descriptors. In that case we end up with observably wrong behaviour - e.g. spawn a child with CLONE_FILES, get all descriptors in range 0..127 open, then close_range(64, ~0U, CLOSE_RANGE_UNSHARE) and watch dup(0) ending up with descriptor #128, despite #64 being observably not open. The minimally invasive fix would be to deal with that in dup_fd(). If this proves to add measurable overhead, we can go that way, but let's try to fix copy_fd_bitmaps() first. * new helper: bitmap_copy_and_expand(to, from, bits_to_copy, size). * make copy_fd_bitmaps() take the bitmap size in words, rather than bits; it's 'count' argument is always a multiple of BITS_PER_LONG, so we are not losing any information, and that way we can use the same helper for all three bitmaps - compiler will see that count is a multiple of BITS_PER_LONG for the large ones, so it'll generate plain memcpy()+memset(). selftests/cpufreq: Don't enable generic lock debugging options Currently the the config fragment for cpufreq enables a lot of generic lock debugging. While these options are useful when testing cpufreq they aren't actually required to run the tests and are therefore out of scope for the cpufreq fragement, they are more of a thing that it's good to enable while doing testing than an actual requirement for cpufreq testing specifically. Having these debugging options enabled, especially the mutex and spinlock instrumentation, mean that any build that includes the cpufreq fragment is both very much larger than a standard defconfig (eg, I'm seeing 35% on x86_64) and also slower at runtime. This is causing real problems for CI systems. In order to avoid building large numbers of kernels they try to group kselftest fragments together, frequently just grouping all the kselftest fragments into a single block. The increased size is an issue for memory constrained systems and is also problematic for systems with fixed storage allocations for kernel images (eg, typical u-boot systems) where it frequently causes the kernel to overflow the storage space allocated for kernels. The reduced performance isn't too bad with real hardware but can be disruptive on emulated platforms. In order to avoid these issues remove these generic instrumentation options from the cpufreq fragment, bringing the cpufreq fragment into line with other fragments which generally set requirements for testing rather than nice to haves. binfmt_elf: Honor PT_LOAD alignment for static PIE [ Upstream commit 3545deff0ec7a37de7ed9632e262598582b140e9 ] The p_align values in PT_LOAD were ignored for static PIE executables (i.e. ET_DYN without PT_INTERP). This is because there is no way to request a non-fixed mmap region with a specific alignment. ET_DYN with PT_INTERP uses a separate base address (ELF_ET_DYN_BASE) and binfmt_elf performs the ASLR itself, which means it can also apply alignment. For the mmap region, the address selection happens deep within the vm_mmap() implementation (when the requested address is 0). The earlier attempt to implement this: commit 9630f0d60fec ("fs/binfmt_elf: use PT_LOAD p_align values for static PIE") commit 925346c129da ("fs/binfmt_elf: fix PT_LOAD p_align values for loaders") did not take into account the different base address origins, and were eventually reverted: aeb7923733d1 ("revert "fs/binfmt_elf: use PT_LOAD p_align values for static PIE"") In order to get the correct alignment from an mmap base, binfmt_elf must perform a 0-address load first, then tear down the mapping and perform alignment on the resulting address. Since this is slightly more overhead, only do this when it is needed (i.e. the alignment is not the default ELF alignment). This does, however, have the benefit of being able to use MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE, to avoid potential collisions. With this fixed, enable the static PIE self tests again. Reported-by: H.J. selftests: link libasan statically for tests with -fsanitize=address When dynamically linking, Address Sanitizer requires its library to be the first one to be loaded; this is apparently to ensure that every call to malloc is intercepted. If using LD_PRELOAD, those listed libraries will be loaded before the libraries listed in the program's ELF and will therefore violate this requirement, leading to the below failure and output from ASan. commit 58e2847ad2e6 ("selftests: line buffer test program's stdout") modified the kselftest runner to force line buffering by forcing the test programs to run through stdbuf. It turns out that stdbuf implements line buffering by injecting a library via LD_PRELOAD. Therefore selftests that use ASan started failing. Fix this by statically linking libasan in the affected test programs, using the -static-libasan option. Note this is already the default for Clang, but not got GCC. selftests/binderfs: use the Makefile's rules, not Make's implicit rules [ Upstream commit 019baf635eb6ffe8d6c1343f81788f02a7e0ed98 ] First of all, in order to build with clang at all, one must first apply Valentin Obst's build fix for LLVM [1]. Once that is done, then when building with clang, via: make LLVM=1 -C tools/testing/selftests ...the following error occurs: clang: error: cannot specify -o when generating multiple output files This is because clang, unlike gcc, won't accept invocations of this form: clang file1.c header2.h While trying to fix this, I noticed that: a) selftests/lib.mk already avoids the problem, and b) The binderfs Makefile indavertently bypasses the selftests/lib.mk build system, and quitely uses Make's implicit build rules for .c files instead. The Makefile attempts to set up both a dependency and a source file, neither of which was needed, because lib.mk is able to automatically handle both. This line: binderfs_test: binderfs_test.c ...causes Make's implicit rules to run, which builds binderfs_test without ever looking at lib.mk. Fix this by simply deleting the "binderfs_test:" Makefile target and letting lib.mk handle it instead. landlock: Add the errata interface commit 15383a0d63dbcd63dc7e8d9ec1bf3a0f7ebf64ac upstream. Some fixes may require user space to check if they are applied on the running kernel before using a specific feature. For instance, this applies when a restriction was previously too restrictive and is now getting relaxed (e.g. for compatibility reasons). However, non-visible changes for legitimate use (e.g. security fixes) do not require an erratum. Because fixes are backported down to a specific Landlock ABI, we need a way to avoid cherry-pick conflicts. The solution is to only update a file related to the lower ABI impacted by this issue. All the ABI files are then used to create a bitmask of fixes. The new errata interface is similar to the one used to get the supported Landlock ABI version, but it returns a bitmask instead because the order of fixes may not match the order of versions, and not all fixes may apply to all versions. The actual errata will come with dedicated commits. The description is not actually used in the code but serves as documentation. Create the landlock_abi_version symbol and use its value to check errata consistency. Update test_base's create_ruleset_checks_ordering tests and add errata tests. This commit is backportable down to the first version of Landlock. selftests/lkdtm: Disable CONFIG_UBSAN_TRAP in test config [ Upstream commit cf77bf698887c3b9ebed76dea492b07a3c2c7632 ] The lkdtm selftest config fragment enables CONFIG_UBSAN_TRAP to make the ARRAY_BOUNDS test kill the calling process when an out-of-bound access is detected by UBSAN. However, after this [1] commit, UBSAN is triggered under many new scenarios that weren't detected before, such as in struct definitions with fixed-size trailing arrays used as flexible arrays. As a result, CONFIG_UBSAN_TRAP=y has become a very aggressive option to enable except for specific situations. make kselftest-merge applies CONFIG_UBSAN_TRAP=y to the kernel config for all selftests, which makes many of them fail because of system hangs during boot. This change removes the config option from the lkdtm kselftest and configures the ARRAY_BOUNDS test to look for UBSAN reports rather than relying on the calling process being killed. selftests/memfd: use IPC semaphore instead of SIGSTOP/SIGCONT [ Upstream commit b24335521de92fd2ee22460072b75367ca8860b0 ] selftests/memfd: use IPC semaphore instead of SIGSTOP/SIGCONT In order to synchronize new processes to test inheritance of memfd_noexec sysctl, memfd_test sets up the sysctl with a value before creating the new process. The new process then sends itself a SIGSTOP in order to wait for the parent to flip the sysctl value and send a SIGCONT signal. This would work as intended if it wasn't the fact that the new process is being created with CLONE_NEWPID, which creates a new PID namespace and the new process has PID 1 in this namespace. There're restrictions on sending signals to PID 1 and, although it's relaxed for other than root PID namespace, it's biting us here. In this specific case the SIGSTOP sent by the new process is ignored (no error to kill() is returned) and it never stops its execution. This is usually not noticiable as the parent usually manages to set the new sysctl value before the child has a chance to run and the test succeeds. But if you run the test in a loop, it eventually reproduces: while [ 1 ]; do ./memfd_test >log 2>&1 || break; done; cat log So this patch replaces the SIGSTOP/SIGCONT synchronization with IPC semaphore. selftests/mincore: Allow read-ahead pages to reach the end of the file [ Upstream commit 197c1eaa7ba633a482ed7588eea6fd4aa57e08d4 ] When running the mincore_selftest on a system with an XFS file system, it failed the "check_file_mmap" test case due to the read-ahead pages reaching the end of the file. The failure log is as below: RUN global.check_file_mmap ... mincore_selftest.c:264:check_file_mmap:Expected i (1024) < vec_size (1024) mincore_selftest.c:265:check_file_mmap:Read-ahead pages reached the end of the file check_file_mmap: Test failed FAIL global.check_file_mmap This is because the read-ahead window size of the XFS file system on this machine is 4 MB, which is larger than the size from the #PF address to the end of the file. As a result, all the pages for this file are populated. blockdev --getra /dev/nvme0n1p5 8192 blockdev --getbsz /dev/nvme0n1p5 512 This issue can be fixed by extending the current FILE_SIZE 4MB to a larger number, but it will still fail if the read-ahead window size of the file system is larger enough. Additionally, in the real world, read-ahead pages reaching the end of the file can happen and is an expected behavior. Therefore, allowing read-ahead pages to reach the end of the file is a better choice for the "check_file_mmap" test case. This duplicated teardown sequence has been observed to manifest as a SIGSEGV in the test child, e.g.: hmm-tests[360141]: segfault (11) at 0 nip 10006964 lr 1000ac3c code 1 in hmm-tests[6964,10000000+30000] Fix this by adopting the same fork()-then-wait pattern already used by the nearby anon_write_child / anon_write_child_shared tests in this file: the child performs the COW verification and then _exit(0)s so it does not run the test teardown, while the parent independently verifies COW, waits for the child, and only then frees the buffer. selftests/mount_setattr: Fix failures on 64K PAGE_SIZE kernels [ Upstream commit f13242a46438e690067a4bf47068fde4d5719947 ] Currently the mount_setattr_test fails on machines with a 64K PAGE_SIZE, with errors such as: # RUN mount_setattr_idmapped.invalid_fd_negative ... mkfs.ext4: No space left on device while writing out and closing file system # mount_setattr_test.c:1055:invalid_fd_negative:Expected system("mkfs.ext4 -q /mnt/C/ext4.img") (256) == 0 (0) # invalid_fd_negative: Test terminated by assertion # FAIL mount_setattr_idmapped.invalid_fd_negative not ok 12 mount_setattr_idmapped.invalid_fd_negative The code creates a 100,000 byte tmpfs: ASSERT_EQ(mount("testing", "/mnt", "tmpfs", MS_NOATIME | MS_NODEV, "size=100000,mode=700"), 0); And then a little later creates a 2MB ext4 filesystem in that tmpfs: ASSERT_EQ(ftruncate(img_fd, 1024 * 2048), 0); ASSERT_EQ(system("mkfs.ext4 -q /mnt/C/ext4.img"), 0); At first glance it seems like that should never work, after all 2MB is larger than 100,000 bytes. However the filesystem image doesn't actually occupy 2MB on "disk" (actually RAM, due to tmpfs). On 4K kernels the ext4.img uses ~84KB of actual space (according to du), which just fits. However on 64K PAGE_SIZE kernels the ext4.img takes at least 256KB, which is too large to fit in the tmpfs, hence the errors. It seems fraught to rely on the ext4.img taking less space on disk than the allocated size, so instead create the tmpfs with a size of 2MB. With that all 21 tests pass on 64K PAGE_SIZE kernels. selftests/mqueue: Fix incorrectly named file commit 64fac99037689020ad97e472ae898e96ea3616dc upstream. Commit 85506aca2eb4 ("selftests/mqueue: Set timeout to 180 seconds") intended to increase the timeout for mq_perf_tests from the default kselftest limit of 45 seconds to 180 seconds. Unfortunately, the file storing this information was incorrectly named setting instead of settings, causing the kselftest runner not to pick up the limit and keep using the default 45 seconds limit. selftests: openvswitch: add config file [ Upstream commit 441a820ccef9af80a9ac5a4c85b9c396e595967c ] The kselftests doc mentions that a config file should be present "if a test needs specific kernel config options enabled". This selftest requires some kernel config, but no config file was provided. We could say that a sub-target could use the parent's config file, but the kselftests doc doesn't mention anything about that. Plus the net/openvswitch target is the only net target without a config file. Here is a new config file, which is a trimmed version of the net one, with hopefully the minimal required kconfig on top of 'make defconfig'. The Fixes tag points to the introduction of the net/openvswitch target, just to help validating this target on stable kernels. tools/testing: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2], introduced in C99: struct foo { int stuff; struct boo array[]; }; By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on. Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this change: "Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1] sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues. This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle. Exercise various mmap(), munmap() and mremap() invocations, which might cause a perf buffer mapping to be split or truncated. To avoid hard coding the perf event and having dependencies on architectures and configuration options, scan through event types in sysfs and try to open them. On success, try to mmap() and if that succeeds try to mmap() the AUX buffer. In case that no AUX buffer supporting event is found, only test the base buffer mapping. If no mappable event is found or permissions are not sufficient, skip the tests. This is because the top level Makefile includes '-fno-strict-aliasing' flag always. The issue here is that GCC 15 emits '-Wmaybe-uninitialized' due to type punning between __be64[] and __b16* when accessing the buffer via be16_to_cpup(). The underlying object is fully initialized but GCC 15 fails to track the aliasing due to the strict aliasing violation here. Please refer [1] and [2]. This results in a false positive warning which is promoted to an error under '-Werror'. This problem is not seen when the compilation is performed with GCC 13 and 14. An issue [1] has also been created on GCC bugzilla. The selftest compiles fine with '-fno-strict-aliasing'. Since this GCC flag is used to compile vphn.c in kernel too, the same flag should be used to build vphn tests when compiling vphn.c in the selftest as well. Fix this by including '-fno-strict-aliasing' during vphn.c compilation in the selftest. This keeps the build working while limiting the scope of the suppression to building vphn tests. Revert "ptp: add testptp mask test" This reverts commit 59ac47a0275fcd5a7637c3d5da20b0905563c7f5, which is commit 26285e689c6cd2cf3849568c83b2ebe53f467143 upstream. The reverted commit extends the selftest to test timestamp event queue mask manipulation in testptp. It exercises masks PTP_MASK_CLEAR_ALL and PTP_MASK_EN_SINGLE, introduced in commit c5a445b1e934 ("ptp: support event queue reader channel masks"), which is not on this stable branch. The test case thus cannot be built against this tree's own UAPI headers. The reverted commit was introduced to resolve a missing dependency of commit 8d9f22c570ba ("testptp: Add option to open PHC in readonly mode"), which is 76868642e427 upstream. The only conflict between the two is the getopt string, and there is otherwise no direct dependency between the two. This patch therefore reverts the cited commit, with hand-resolving the getopt string to include 'r' (as introduced by c6dc458227a3), but not 'F' (introduced by c1c50689799d). The cCurrent code already has logic to detect and filter such high latency case by reading the watchdog twice and checking the two deltas. Due to the randomness of the latency, there is a low probabilty that the first delta (latency) is big, but the second delta is small and looks valid. The watchdog code retries the readouts by default twice, which is not necessarily sufficient for systems with a large number of CPUs. There is a command line parameter 'max_cswd_read_retries' which allows to increase the number of retries, but that's not user friendly as it needs to be tweaked per system. As the number of required retries is proportional to the number of online CPUs, this parameter can be calculated at runtime. Scale and enlarge the number of retries according to the number of online CPUs and remove the command line parameter completely. selftests/resctrl: Protect against array overflow when reading strings [ Upstream commit 46058430fc5d39c114f7e1b9c6ff14c9f41bd531 ] resctrl selftests discover system properties via a variety of sysfs files. Take care to do bounds checking when using fscanf() to read the contents of files into a string buffer because by default fscanf() assumes arbitrarily long strings. If the file contains more bytes than the array can accommodate then an overflow will occur. Provide a maximum field width to the conversion specifier to protect against array overflow. The maximum is one less than the array size because string input stores a terminating null byte that is not covered by the maximum field width. rseq/selftests: Use weak symbol reference, not definition, to link with glibc commit a001cd248ab244633c5fabe4f7c707e13fc1d1cc upstream. Add "extern" to the glibc-defined weak rseq symbols to convert the rseq selftest's usage from weak symbol definitions to weak symbol _references_. Effectively re-defining the glibc symbols wreaks havoc when building with -fno-common, e.g. generates segfaults when running multi-threaded programs, as dynamically linked applications end up with multiple versions of the symbols. Building with -fcommon, which until recently has the been the default for GCC and clang, papers over the bug by allowing the linker to resolve the weak/tentative definition to glibc's "real" definition. Note, the symbol itself (or rather its address), not the value of the symbol, is set to 0/NULL for unresolved weak symbol references, as the symbol doesn't exist and thus can't have a value. Check for a NULL rseq size pointer to handle the scenario where the test is statically linked against a libc that doesn't support rseq in any capacity. minmax: make generic MIN() and MAX() macros available everywhere [ Upstream commit 1a251f52cfdc417c84411a056bc142cbd77baef4 ] This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very traditional semantics. The goal is to use these for C constant expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to simplify the min()/max() macros. These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a few different approaches: - trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new generic MIN/MAX macros automatically. - non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the generic version automatically" case. - strange use case #1 A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their versioning is with #define MAJ 1 #define MIN 2 #define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN) which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as #define DRV_VERSION "1.2" instead. - strange use case #2 A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random 'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than the traditional macro that takes arguments. These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new function-line macros only expand when followed by an open parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use. Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version that does the same thing. I left such cases alone. The original commit that brought VDSO support into powerpc/64 has the following explanation: Note that the symbols exposed by the vDSO aren't "normal" function symbols, apps can't be expected to link against them directly, the vDSO's are both seen as if they were linked at 0 and the symbols just contain offsets to the various functions. This is done on purpose to avoid a relocation step (ppc64 functions normally have descriptors with abs addresses in them). When glibc uses those functions, it's expected to use it's own trampolines that know how to reach them. The descriptors it's talking about are the OPD function descriptors used on ABI v1 (big endian). But it would be more correct for a text symbol to have type function, even if there's no function descriptor for it. glibc has a special case already for handling the VDSO symbols which creates a fake opd pointing at the kernel symbol. So changing the VDSO symbol type to function shouldn't affect that. For ABI v2, there is no function descriptors and VDSO functions can safely have function type. So lets flag VDSO entry points as functions and revert the selftest change. selftests/x86: Add a test to detect infinite SIGTRAP handler loop commit f287822688eeb44ae1cf6ac45701d965efc33218 upstream. When FRED is enabled, if the Trap Flag (TF) is set without an external debugger attached, it can lead to an infinite loop in the SIGTRAP handler. To avoid this, the software event flag in the augmented SS must be cleared, ensuring that no single-step trap remains pending when ERETU completes. This test checks for that specific scenario—verifying whether the kernel correctly prevents an infinite SIGTRAP loop in this edge case when FRED is enabled. The test should _always_ pass with IDT event delivery, thus no need to disable the test even when FRED is not enabled. selftests/zram: Adapt the situation that /dev/zram0 is being used If zram-generator package is installed and works, then we can not remove zram module because zram swap is being used. This case needs a clean zram environment, change this test by using hot_add/hot_remove interface. So even zram device is being used, we still can add zram device and remove them in cleanup. The two interface was introduced since kernel commit 6566d1a32bf7("zram: add dynamic device add/remove functionality") in v4.2-rc1. If kernel supports these two interface, we use hot_add/hot_remove to slove this problem, if not, just check whether zram is being used or built in, then skip it on old kernel. selftests/Makefile: include $(INSTALL_DEP_TARGETS) in clean target to clean net/lib dependency [ Upstream commit d3f7457da7b9527a06dbcbfaf666aa51ac2eeb53 ] The selftests 'make clean' does not clean the net/lib because it only processes $(TARGETS) and ignores $(INSTALL_DEP_TARGETS). selftests: introduce gen_tar Makefile target The gen_kselftest_tar.sh always packages *all* selftests and doesn't pass along any variables to make install to influence what should be built. This can result in an early error on the command line ("Unknown tarball format TARGETS=XXX"), or unexpected test failures as the tarball contains tests people wanted to skip on purpose. Since the makefile already contains all the logic, we can add a target for packaging. Keep the default .gz target the script uses, and actually extend the supported formats by using tar's autodetection. To not break current workflows, keep the gen_kselftest_tar.sh script as it is, with an added suggestion to use the makefile target instead. kselftest: Add a ksft_perror() helper commit 907f33028871fa7c9a3db1efd467b78ef82cce20 upstream. The standard library perror() function provides a convenient way to print an error message based on the current errno but this doesn't play nicely with KTAP output. Provide a helper which does an equivalent thing in a KTAP compatible format. nolibc doesn't have a strerror() and adding the table of strings required doesn't seem like a good fit for what it's trying to do so when we're using that only print the errno. selftest: Taint kernel when test module loaded Make any kselftest test module (using the kselftest_module framework) taint the kernel with TAINT_TEST on module load. Also mark the module as a test module using MODULE_INFO(test, "Y") so that other tools can tell this is a test module. We can't rely solely on this, though, as these test modules are also often built-in. Finally, update the kselftest documentation to mention that the kernel should be tainted, and how to do so manually (as below). Note that several selftests use kernel modules which are not based on the kselftest_module framework, and so will not automatically taint the kernel. This can be done in two ways: - Moving the module to the tools/testing directory. All modules under this directory will taint the kernel. - Adding the 'test' module property with: MODULE_INFO(test, "Y") Similarly, selftests which do not load modules into the kernel generally should not taint the kernel (or possibly should only do so on failure), as it's assumed that testing from user-space should be safe. Regardless, they can write to /proc/sys/kernel/tainted if required. selftests: Introduce Makefile variable to list shared bash scripts [ Upstream commit 2a0683be5b4c9829e8335e494a21d1148e832822 ] Some tests written in bash source other files in a parent directory. For example, drivers/net/bonding/dev_addr_lists.sh sources net/forwarding/lib.sh. If a subset of tests is exported and run outside the source tree (for example by using make -C tools/testing/selftests gen_tar TARGETS="drivers/net/bonding"), these other files must be made available as well. Commit ae108c48b5d2 ("selftests: net: Fix cross-tree inclusion of scripts") addressed this problem by symlinking and copying the sourced files but this only works for direct dependencies. Commit 25ae948b4478 ("selftests/net: add lib.sh") changed net/forwarding/lib.sh to source net/lib.sh. As a result, that latter file must be included as well when the former is exported. This was not handled and was reverted in commit 2114e83381d3 ("selftests: forwarding: Avoid failures to source net/lib.sh"). In order to allow reinstating the inclusion of net/lib.sh from net/forwarding/lib.sh, add a mechanism to list dependent files in a new Makefile variable and export them. This allows sourcing those files using the same expression whether tests are run in-tree or exported. Dependencies are not resolved recursively so transitive dependencies must be listed in TEST_INCLUDES. For example, if net/forwarding/lib.sh sources net/lib.sh; the Makefile related to a test that sources net/forwarding/lib.sh from a parent directory must list: TEST_INCLUDES := \ ../../../net/forwarding/lib.sh \ ../../../net/lib.sh v2: Fix rst syntax in Documentation/dev-tools/kselftest.rst (Jakub Kicinski) v1 (from RFC): * changed TEST_INCLUDES to take relative paths, like other TEST_* variables (Vladimir Oltean) * preserved common "$(MAKE) OUTPUT=... -C ... target" ordering in Makefile (Petr Machata) Signed-off-by: Benjamin Poirier <bpoirier@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
